I TOTALLY believe you'll do whatever it takes to reach your goals man, whether it involves blowing truckers for food and rides or killing hoboes for the best spots on the boxcar. You'll. Go. The. Distance.

life's too short to not kill a hobo for straw bedding. you know what i mean?

I know right? They knew the risks when they took the hobo's oath.

Ok. I'm done trying to make myself clear, you don't get it.

I'll be sure to update you as we go because we are going to start this, hell I've got the plane tickets so starting isn't the issue, finishing will be.

Oh and to Mr. mid 20's can't finish your 25 mile walk? You don't think I can handle it do you? Ok weeelllll try this on for size.

Last week. 20 miles. 33lbs. No problem. No this was NOT on a track, this was down hills, up hills, in sand, on rocks, on road, you name it. Did I have blisters? Nope. Was I exhausted? No, sure I was a little tired and I slept well that night but 7 hours later I woke up on time for work and felt fine. Feet were a wee bit sore but that's expected. All in all I was fine, as was my brother.

I think you underestimate us, big time.

Psst, Sid. Think over 6 months isn't long enough? What about just over two weeks? Refering to this guy.

dude, i don't care if you're trying to insult my intelligence here, but when you insult my boyfriend "mr. mid 20's" who is in prime physical condition because he's in the army and has to defend our country in all different parts of the world and knows what he's talking about, i'm gonna get a bit on the defense.

first of all, the fatman guy had sponsers and supporters, something neither you nor your brother apparently have. i'm not gonna sit there and read his website, but it looks to me like he had some trainers helping him on this one.

second of all, this 25 mile "walk" trevor went on was in the middle of a desert, and not to mention a fucking war zone. which is a lot harder than anything you've ever done, i'm sure.

glad you walked 20 miles once in your entire life, but after seeing all the constructive advise you've just cast aside in this thread, and were being a dick about it, i'm sure a lot of us can't wait to see you fail at this.

we all tried to be nice, but you're just being a pretty big asshole.

trust me, you aren't gonna be able to handle this burden. i suggest you listen to some of these people trying to help you out.

Oh, I finished my walk. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that. In just over seven hours. And I did it three more times before I left out of the 10th Mountain Division. Twice in Upstate New York during the winter time, and once in Afghanistan. I also carried a 80-something pound ruck 8 miles up the side of a mountain at 6000 feet above sea level. Each time, my feet came out feeling like they'd been through a meat grinder.

I'm not telling you this to say "Look at me, I'm so much better than you!" Not in the least. I'm trying to establish that I do, in fact, know what I am talking about. I have personal experience with what it is like to make extended movements, and am trying to supply you with some information about it. If I had wanted to get into a little online pissing match, I wouldn'tve been quite as polite.

Last week. 20 miles. 33lbs. No problem. No this was NOT on a track, this was down hills, up hills, in sand, on rocks, on road, you name it. Did I have blisters? Nope. Was I exhausted? This is the first time you've mentioned this. Ever. Had you been telling us this before (and if it's true) you'd probably find people a lot less critical of your state of readiness. There's a world of difference between saying you walk three miles a day and being able to complete a 20 mile movement with load. So if we're "underestimating you" like you say, it's because your posts on the matter (and the only thing that we have to go on) are vague about what real training and perperations you've made. On top of that, when someone questions you on it (politely or otherwise) your responses are dismissive, defensive, or sometimes even downright juvenile.

I do believe that I'm done with this particular discussion, but I wish you the best of luck. With your "fuck you all, I don't need your help" attitude, you'll be needing all the luck you can muster.

Cheers.

it's just frustrating that we're trying to help you, and you're getting all angry about it. even if you don't like or want the advise, get off your high horse and thank people for looking out for you.

people are just trying to help you to make sure you don't die. so be nice, k?

Dude's going on a trip across the country and he's not bringing a deck of cards? Are you serious? And like you're not bringing it because of the weight? I understand sticking to the essentials, but a large, large part of what you will be dealing with is boredom. How many things can you do with a deck of 52+ playing cards (replace as needed)? A helluva a lot more than the portable dvd player you're not bringing.

I know, right? "You people are assholes who underestimate me and I'm not listening to you anymore. Here let me start another thread about it to tell you why." For fuck's sake.

Also, I think this dude should be bring along a camera, to show us how far he's walking. Assuming he doesn't get it stolen by vagrants.

I've talked to a lot of people about this. people at a local adventure outfitter (Summit Hut, a place not unlike REI,) Not one[i/] of them has had a negitive thing to say. Never once have I heard "you'll die," or "that's about the stupidest thing I've heard."

Soooooo....the people at the retail store...who sell the equipment you are buying didn't tell you that you just might be unprepared for this sort of thing?

Makes sense to me...I mean...my bartender doesn't seem to think I have a drinking problem, either. The local pit-boss seems to think that my gambling habit is perfectly normal...and healthy.

Actually Cash the people are super nice unlike a pit-boss most likely and they have our best interests in mind, not just our money. They are good people. I don't know many people that would stay after their shift to just talk to us (not about buying things, just talk.) Kathy at Summit hut was helping us from open at 10am till 8:45pm (her shift ended at 8pm.) She told us NOT to buy a lot of things she could have told us we needed. And as a matter of fact she did tell us we were unperared thus the reason she's been so helpful in all our visits.

You see there are people that think we're unperpared but they're still nice and helpful. They offer help and kind tips.

You say I throw your advice in your face but... I don't see where I've done that.

It's good that you're seeking advice, but hitting up salespeople at the local REI is like asking the high school kid in the electrical section of Lowes how to wire your house.

#1 It's not REI
#2 The lady we talked has biked across the country, gone on a multi-day (I forget how many, I want to say 5+) hike where she had to carry all her own water, has climed many very big mountains. I want to say Denali but I forget which one.
#3 Although her job description MAY read "sales-person" there ARE good people out there.

Here's an example, me. I work at Blockbuster for one of my jobs and if someone asks me if Crank is good do I say "oh yeah! You should rent that AND The Covenent!" Hardly, I tell them "Well, Crank is a 'fun' movie but it's a terrible one. If you're looking for crazy stupid action, yeah, it has that. But it's a crummy film in almost every other area."

My point is, despite what you think of Kathy, she's a good lady and cares about what we're doing, not just trying to clean out our pockets. How do I know? Because you can tell if you have any sort of ability to read a person/ So I think she's be a bit offened if you compared her to the "high school kid in the electrical section of Lowes." I take offence to that, it's pretty mean.

Ok. I think this has run it's course. I think your journal and the thread in the hiking group should prove sufficient for whatever additional information you can gather to help you prepare for your trip.

Good luck.
