I'm lost
January 2006

DEC 17, 2006 05:40 PM

Anyone done this before? I start my third job today and could end up next Sunday with about 110 hours under my belt when all is said and done. Then I've got about 9 more weeks of that.

I've done the two jobs, college and girlfriend thing a for a couple months and had to drop a job because I had no time for her and school. But now without school or a girl I don't care about free time, but sleep time... yeah another thing.

I couldn't do it. My one job takes enough out of me.

You know FriedHamster, I really applaud your out of the box thinking to a degree, but did it ever occur to you that there are some things (a 40-60 hour work week, shelter, etc..) that are the accepted norm because they have been found to be the best way to stay healthy and alive?

Staying healthy and alive are obviously not concerns for him.

Not for me. Money is nice and all, but not if you never get a chance to enjoy it.

It's only for a short time FuckMagnet. I completely understamd that the so called 'norm' only work a 40ish hour work week so that you have time for things you would rather do. So you can spend time with people you call friends, do get sleep and the like. I don't have plans of doing this more than 2 months, if I can.

But as you may know I'm planning a trip across the country with my brother come March. To do that I need a good chunk of money for gear to have before I go, to have money for the trip while on it and also to have left over money so I don't have to start from nothing after I get done.

So yeah, 100+ hour work weeks, while not normal, could be downright dumb and unhealthy but it's only 2 months. I'm not doing this for a few years. I'm only 22 and I think I should be able to handle it for 60 days.

Oh, well that's good. Do your 65 year old future self a favor and start a 401K while you're at it. wink

Ii did 100+ weeks for nearly a year. I was exhausted and had no life, but it was temporary, and the money I earned was nice. Frankly, I've always had extra on my plate-- I worked two full-time jobs simultaneously for three years before my 100+ hour stint-- so an additional 20 hours a week was nothing.

One thing I'd suggest-- see if you can get friends to do minor errands for you, like grocery shopping, running mail by the post office, whatever. The stuff that drove me nuts when working that much wasn't the time spent at work, it was trying to fit in all of the petty errands.

You will start to hate anything and everything at around week 3. I highly recommend getting something you can use to entertain yourself while you're idle at work like a PSP or even cell phone solitaire because you're going get bored much more easily than you did before. Oh, and you should probably quit drinking beforehand.

I'd warn you to take care of your health and get enough sleep. Most of the people I've spoken with that are doing the same as you tend to get sick fairly consistently after a few weeks of that level of mental and physical stress. Vitamins and vegetables!

Also, if you can't sleep, eat something vaguely nutritious.

Either you're getting feedback for some kind of reality TV show you're planning, or you're severely masochistic. Not even LAIN came up with ideas this harmful to the human body.

It's important that AT LEAST once a week - really, every 5th day or so - you get a good solid 8-10 hours sleep. It's not the physical part that gets most people, it's the mental fatigue. A really tired brain can do some dumb shit.

Anything over 48 hours is illegal (with a few exceptions) in the UK unless both the employer and employee "opt out" of the European Working Time" directive.

The US culture of working long hours with few days off is weird; people are more productive when they work shorter hours with more days off.
