sorry about that. anyway...

I want to get my brother katamari damacy for christmas, but I've never played it. it just looks like something we'd both have fun with, and I've heard it's nothing short of really awesome.

the question is: should I get katamari 1 or katamari 2? everything I've read says 2 is a better game with more features, but do you have to have played 1 for 2 to make any sense? is there a bunch of backstory in 1 that makes 2 more enjoyable?

Neither of them make any sense anyway. There might as well be no story.

And also, you will have tons of fun, but if you're anything like me, it'll only be for about a week.

back story and Katamari Damacy are mutually exclusive.

do what i did for my brother - i got him the first one for his birthday (in November) last year, and told him he could have the second one when he beat it or when Christmas came, whichever came first. they're about $20 each so both are still cheaper than a brand new big-name title.

the neat thing about the Katamari games is that the stars you make in the first game will be automatically loaded into the second game, so it's cool to have both. plus the story in the first one makes you familiar with the characters, which makes the story in the second more interesting. the first one is also a nice intro, since the objectives are much more basic.

we've ALMOST completely finished the second one - there's like one present we still have to get and we have to do some more (LOTS more) of the final bonus stage. but sometimes i'll just get an itch to play and end up playing all day and setting mad records everywhere.

Get 2. The controls are tighter, and the graphics are slightly better (more colors, larger environments, more objects.)
