Only 11 days after opening on Broadway, the stage version of Nick Hornby's novel-turned-movie High Fidelity has been cancelled.
The show opened to poor reviews on December 7 and will end its run at the Imperial Theater on December 17, the producers said in a statement on Tuesday. It began previews on November 20 and will conclude having played 18 preview performances and 14 regular performances.
Funny enough, I caught this show opening weekend. I went because I had free tickets. "High Fidelity" is one of my favorite books of all time but I wasn't crazy about the movie and figured this would be worse. Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting and there were a few decent tunes. It was also packed, which is why I'm surprised it closed so quickly. I think the losers in all of this are the performers, who do a hell of a job and are now out of work.
I will admit that I did enjoy the book when I read it way too long ago, Nick Hornby's a good writer. At the same time, I can't imagine a musical adaptation of a guy who sits around doing nothing in a record store most of the day being even remotely interesting.
