Only 11 days after opening on Broadway, the stage version of Nick Hornby's novel-turned-movie High Fidelity has been cancelled.

The show opened to poor reviews on December 7 and will end its run at the Imperial Theater on December 17, the producers said in a statement on Tuesday. It began previews on November 20 and will conclude having played 18 preview performances and 14 regular performances.

High Fidelity is the second ill-conceived Broadway musical to flop recently. Last month The Times They Are A-Changin' was yanked after less than a month.

Sources (read: the voices in my head) state that Bob Dylan has sent a letter of sympathy to Hornby, along with a top-five mix tape.

The track listing is:

"It Hurts Me Too"
"Dignity"
"Stage Fright"
"Ain't A-Gonna Grieve"
"Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine"

Perhaps the Queen musical will fare better when it arrives in North America next year.

Yes. Fuck them right in their goddamned collective ear.

Also, I've heard the Queen musical is quite good.

Funny enough, I caught this show opening weekend. I went because I had free tickets. "High Fidelity" is one of my favorite books of all time but I wasn't crazy about the movie and figured this would be worse. Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting and there were a few decent tunes. It was also packed, which is why I'm surprised it closed so quickly. I think the losers in all of this are the performers, who do a hell of a job and are now out of work.

Let's hope Paul Rodgers has nothing to do with it.

I will admit that I did enjoy the book when I read it way too long ago, Nick Hornby's a good writer. At the same time, I can't imagine a musical adaptation of a guy who sits around doing nothing in a record store most of the day being even remotely interesting.
