I guess multiculturalism is too much for progressive Portland.

Bah! Humbug!

Actually this

But the Port did not want to set the precedent of allowing an outside group to erect a holiday display at the airport, he said, and staff was too busy with holiday traffic to deal with the complexities of doing it themselves.

Kind of makes sense. City Hall sure, but an airport has other things to worry about.

I am not Christian, but I have a Christmas tree in my home. I don't really associate them with the religious aspect of any winter holiday.

If I ran Sea-Tac I would have done the exact same thing. No matter what they do, someone is going to get their shit bent out of shape, and want to turn it into a media opportunity. To hell with everyone, you want a Christmas Tree, buy the biggest fucking pine tree you can find and cram it in your house until your windows explode, or get a Menorah so big it burns down the entire neighborhood, or get a voodoo stick so tall it bumps the moon.

But if you are at the airport, get yourself an eggnogg latte' and shut the fuck up.

True airports are busy, and they also didn't want to deal with it so just take it down and say, deal with the issue later.

Meaning: we'll just ignore it and hope it goes away.

Portland and Seattle are two different cities, in different states. Just so you know.

Every year I ask Mom if we should get a Christmas tree, and she always says no. We're Jewish.

We do have this guy, though:

Ack! My grandparents have a thing they place under their doormat that plays that song whenever someone walks on it. It's maddening.

I have a tree (well, two--a normal sized one and a small one), and I'm an atheist.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with what Sea-Tac did here.

All the guy wanted was some acknowledgement that Jews also live in this country. Is it really that hard to put up a menorah when you fill an airport with Christmas decorations? I am not offended by this however I am deeply disappointed that we still live in a country where people are unwilling to make a simple gesture but will fight tooth and nail over a perceived attack on Christmas. Hanukkah isn't even an that important of a holidy for Jews. It only got that way
because of Christmas. On the really important Jewish holidays we don't get off work let alone have decorations all over the place.

And according to wikipedia although there were pagan rituals that involved trees the modern custom can only be traced back to a Bremen guild in 1570 which had a small decorated fir for the children on Christmas morning. As far as I am concerned a Christmas tree might as well be Jesus.
