I get scared when I drive over or under a bridge. I get afraid that it will collapse and crush me under it, or I'll fall to my bloody death.

I get scared when I ride the bus. No seatbelts, so if we crash, I'm going to get flung out of the window or into something hard that will break bones and quite possibly kill me.

I get scared when I run the garbage disposal. I'm afraid there will be something sharp hiding in there that'll fly out and stab me in the face.

OK, so we've established that I live in fear. What about you? When do you get scared?

I just want to say that the garbage disposal scares me - period. I'm afraid that somehow I'm going to have my hand in the sink and it will turn on and mangle me.

Here's a big one: I get scared that the sun will unexpectedly supernova and the Earth will be wiped off the face of the universe. I obsess a little bit about what the last moment of consciousness would feel like. Ditto with nuclear war. I fear a death filled with agony and soul-crushing pain. Especially if it's sudden and unexpected.

I wish I could do that. It seriously freaks me out sometimes.

Going over a bridge in itself doesn't bother me , but those ones that made of metal grating always freak me out . When you're on them , it feels like you're driving on ice or something . Kind of like the car is very rapidly going to the left then the right for about a second at a time .
I'm also afraid that I may be some kind of psychopath who's just barely holding it together eeek If only psychoanalysis wasn't so expensive I'd go find out .

Clasutrophobia, being stuck in a tunnell in traffic, not moving, and realizing how like a coffin it is.

I'm not claustrophobic, but I get pretty scared in tunnels, too. Underwater ones, especially, but also when I ride the subway.

Until I started this thread I didn't realize how often I worry about disaster happening. Or how scared I am of death.

Freak accidents totally scare me like nothing else. Especially when they lead to a bizarre death that some people actually laugh at, because it's just so bizarre. I wouldn't want to die in a way that makes people laugh. frown

I see what you mean. I have always kind of hoped for the "peaceful death in sleep" thing, but maybe I need to rethink that.

I have a bit of phobia of being trapped. Fortunately it doesn't come up in real life very much. I noticed it watching a film about caves dug on Easter Island, for the brides to pail before their weddings. To get in you 'crawl' through a horizontal then vertical then horizontal tunnel. The idea of getting stuck was just horrifying. So when watching The Descent it wasn't the monsters which were causing palpitations.

No problem with coffin sized elevators. Bookcase 'trap' killed US woman, was a really creepy bit of news to read.

I honestly thought that I was the only person who dreaded being under a bridge. I always worry that there will be an earthquake and that the vehicle im in will be under a bridge, the bridge will collapse during said earthquake and squish me.

I am also petrified of tornadoes and thunderstorms. When i was 3 lightning struck my bedroom causing the ceiling to collapse. I had just gone to my parents room and told them something bad was going to happen when it did happen. Then when i was 5 lightning struck my house again (a different house)
then when i was 26 lightning struck the street light in front of my house, and just last year it struck the tree in my back yard.
so yeah i dont like lightning much.

I'm afraid of oceans. I still swim, but:

jellyfish,
sea anenomes (sp?)
rip tides,
undertow,
and sea monsters

all scare me to death. I grew up swimming in fresh water lakes, and that's still my preference, but even then I'm afraid of leaches.

TakesATrainToCry, I think you're mixing up sea anenomes and sea urchins. An anenome is a little squishy thing that is quite harmless....a sea urchin has the needles.

And can you fucking believe they used to use leaches regularly in medicine? "Oh, he's got a fever...bring out the leaches....."

I think you're right about the anenomes and sea urchins. Even then, a little aquatic squishy thing is fairly gross, if not scary. And yes: leaches have no place in medicine. I don't care what they cure. Have you seen one up close? They're terrifying.

Never seen one in person...only on the Discovery Channel (and of course fake ones in movies such as Stand By Me)...and I cannot fucking believe that they used to put those things on people's skin on purpose.

Holy shit, me too. I get this lingering dread every time I have to use it.

I get scared when I have to scrape my windows after work. I'm always freaked out that a hobo (yes, in South Dakota) is going to come up and attack me, and all Iw ill have to defend myself with is my fucking ice scraper.

I need to get a day job...

I get nervous about swimming in water when it's either too dark or too murky for me to see under the surface. I get paranoid about what might be down there.

I can do it, and have done, but it always makes me uncomfortable.

in the dark alone
going over or in large bodies of water
flying, especially taking off and landing
when i get phantom pains
when i havent used the bathroom on my side of the house in a few days. possible spiders or snakes living in the toilet that only come out when im sitting on it.
on ladders
when walking on wet ground. ever since i fell and broke my tailbone, i get scared walking on the ground even when its barely wet.

Your bars close that early? Weird. Visitors to Indiana act like we're in the depths of the backwoods when last call goes out a little before 3 am.

I'm terrified when I have to turn left across traffic when there's no stop light to give me a break in traffic. Divided highways are the worst. When I was a kid, my mom's car stalled out during such a turn, and nearly died in the resulting crash. I got bounced around relatives and family friends for half a year as she recovered from the crash and reconstructive surgery; even now, 20 years later, she has an occasional shard of glass grow out of her skin.

So friends know by now to not comment when I seek out stoplights (or convenient place for a u-turn) when I need to turn left.

Yep, I'm in Washington state. Home of state-run liquor stores where you pay retail for all alcohol which close at 10:00 p.m. on weekend nights and last call that ends around 1:30 a.m. in bars. You can still drink your drink up until 2:00 but most bars won't serve you after 1:30.

I really miss California. :|
