I'm lost
January 2006

DEC 08, 2006 03:38 PM

I need new glasses, mine are falling apart.

I plan on going to LensCrafters and I'm thinking I'll get the FeatherWates® Complete Lenses Made with Scotchgard™. But I'm wondering, anyone have these? Are they as grand as they claim?

People have suggested contacts but I'm not going to try them, I just like glasses better. I like being able to take them off any time I like. But I'm not a huge fan of needing to wipe them off so much due to dust, water, sweat and various other stuff that gets on them.

Are these lens's really as good as they claim? If you have them do you like, love, or hate them?

And fianlly if you have much experience in getting glasses know of a better place than LensCrafters? Maybe someplace that doesn't charge $69 for an eye exam.

I've never had a problem with Lenscrafters. That's where I bought my last 3 pairs of glasses.

You probably won't find anywhere that charges much less for an eye exam. If you're lucky you can find somewhere that will include the eye exam with your purchase, but then you're obligated to buy the glasses.

I buy featherweights out of necessity because my glasses would be insanely thick otherwise. I love them. I also got the scratch coating and I've had my current pair for almost three years now and no scratches.

Eye exams are expensive no matter what, so I wouldn't suggest trying to find anything cheaper than that.

I don't generally like the Lenscrafter's selection of frames. Lately, i've gotten into the habit of getting an exam somewhere, and then taking the prescription to a local optician to get the lenses made for any frames I want. The best part is, I only pay $1 to $20 for frames that I can pick up anywhere one can find awesome frames (thriftstore, ebay, etc) and the lenses are only $45. Should you need that service in Phoenix, I go to Union Optical downtown.

I realize I didn't answer any of your questions.

Did you get just the scratch coating or the 3M stuff? I talked to someone at LensCrafters and she made it sound like the 3M coating is about as strong as you can get, and only droping them on gravel would possibly create a small dent, not a full scratch though.

Roethke, sounds like some nice insurance you have there, I'm not currently on any plans so getting lenses for only $45 isn't going to happen for me, sadly.

As far as frames go I think I'm going to try those memory metal ones made from titanium. I want something really light and that can wrap around my ears (I have this problem of looking down and my glasses falling off.)

I want a really good pair that I can wear anywhere, work, a date, a nice dinner, etc. And ones that will last for a very long time is the idea.

the guarantee/warranty at lenscrafters is awesome, and they will tighten and make minor repairs for the life of the glasses.
i once had my dog chew the side piece and they replaced it for free. blush

I wouldn't recommend titanium frames... I once had em and when they break (cause they do break !) it's pretty much over... and mine were like 300$ so that was not a happy moment.

But Roethke, that actually sounds quite nice to me... I'll try to remember that for next time... gonna have to ask if they'd do that at the place I go to... always wanted some Vash the Stampede glasses biggrin

I don't know if mine are featherweight but I do have the scratchcoating going on 3 years, no scratches.

Even got mugged while wearing them, no scratches.

So no go on the titanium eh? Just go with plastic then? Know of any other good materials they make glasses frames from? Light and strong.

I'm glad of this thread because things are getting blurry for the first time in my life and I will need glasses soon. And when I say "soon", I mean, like, "now".

I got my current glasses at Target due to my insurance so I have no idea about the cost of the exam, but I've bought at Lenscrafter before. I agree with Roethke, they do have a shitty frame selection but other than that they weren't bad. Good choice if you don't have insurance. It looks like that 3M thing has glare protection, which for me is a must have.

I hate contacts for the same reasons, I like to be able to take them off easily, and glasses prevent shit from getting in my eyes as opposed to contacts that turn me into a crying 4 year old girl whenever I get shit in my eyes.

glasses scratch, no matter how thick the guard. feather weight is awesome, as seconded by subrosa, but i believer there are two grades of thinness. also, you may want to try the glare reduction coating. this simply put, allows people to see your eyes more often than light reflected on your lenses.

also, if you know what frames you want, you can get them marginally cheaper from go-optic.com, or some address of that nature.

Let me know if you get them and how they turn out. I got my glasses from Target recently, paid a fuckload of money for the lenses (I had to so that they wouldn't be Coke-bottle glasses) and they're already scratched to shit just from normal daily wear. I'd be willing to dish out some extra cash for something that wouldn't scratch.

As far as frames go, I got plastic ones and they're great. I had to buy mine out of the youth section because I have a tiny head, apparently. But I think my next pair will probably be plastic, as well.

Lenscrafters and me go way back. I honestly don't know where you'd find a cheaper eye exam.

Also, scratchproof FeatherWates lenses are god. My glasses are half an inch thick around the sides with the FeatherWates lenses. I can't even fathom what they'd be like to deal with if made in real glass. The 3M stainguard or whatever seems a little overkill, though. I guess it depends on the cost.

Didn't I mention that I don't have insurance? That's why I go to a local guy, instead of a big chain store. Union Optical charges $45 for a pair of lenses in any frames of your choosing.

Wow, that's ancient. tongue

I've been wearing the same pair of glasses for over ten years now. They're so old that I don't even remember when exactly I bought them, just that it must have been between '92 and '96. They're virtually indestructible. A year ago I had a little bicycle accident and hit concrete ground with my face. My brows were bruised, but the glasses didn't have a single scratch.

Sorry, not really helping here.

I don't know if the law allows for this in AZ but in Oregon, I always shoppped around for my eye exam and glasses separately. I'd usually get my exam whenever I had to in order to get new contacts but then not buy glasses until someplace had a good sale (i.e. the 50% off frames or buy one, get one sales) or I'd buy my frames at Costco. They have some really nice ones there.

i do exactly that...

my first pair of glasses, i did the exam/frames/lens through the same person, and it cost me around $300...

since then, i buy frames at thrift stores, and get lenses fit to them, and i hardly ever go over $60....
so insurance isn't even worth it.
