so i recently got a new nextel/sprint plan and they gave me a motorola i710. its one of those heavy-duty clamshell numbers.
the number one most totally retarded thing about the phone is the way text messaging (doesnt) works. one would expect that you look at a name in your phone book, open a menu and choose to send a text message. not on this piece of shit.
text messaging is all done over the web and my messaging is not integrated with my contact list at all. when i want to send a text, i have to connect to the web, come up with the number somehow, enter it, compose... when i receive a text, my phone has to connect to the web and the sender is represented by a phone number even if they are in my devices contact list.
besides that, the battery sucked right out of the box.
anyway, im going to get another phone. are there any sprint/nextel subscribers who are happy with their device? durability and text messaging-ease are key features for me.
I just got rid of my Nextel service (mostly because their customer service sucked ass), but I had the I836. It was exactly like you said you wanted: go into contacts, find the name, type the text message. SImple.
(actually, if you want one cheap, PM me, I'm looking to sell mine).

i appreciate that but many of the reviews im reading say the battery life isnt so great on that one either. i run around a lot and need a device that will get me through at least a day and a half of heavy use or a few days of non-use.

Yeah, the battery thing is a big problem, especially if you get out of the coverage area. My battery didn't last for shit (another of the problems I had).
And another thing. Where the fuck is my flying car!?!?!

Most phone operating systems look like they were designed by the same people who wrote VCR instruction manuals.
That's why I usually stick with phones using Nokia's Series 60 platform. Those Fins know what they're doing, and their smartphones have no equal in terms of convenience and ease of use.
They're not so complex that it doesn't feel like a phone, yet they're advanced enough to do whatever you want.
My texting is cumbersome. I have a Sanyo something or other with a Sprint plan. It's got some dead pixels but that's probably because I've dropped it a million times.
My other phone is a Motorola i670 with a Nextel plan for work. It's not very reliable. It's one of those phones that will have zero bars and then you turn the other direction and it gets 3. This could be because I work at the airport but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's fucking weird. When it rings, if the TV is on, the TV starts making a horrible clicking noise in time with the phone ringing.
One time it was in my purse hanging on a hook on the wall. On the other side of the wall was an electrical outlet with a GFCI. When the phone rang, the GFCI reset itself rapidly in time with the rings.
I guess I have nothing helpful to say, really except, here's a site that looks like it has some good info:
