Earlier this month, a 10 year-old resident of Putnam Valley, NY was suspended from school after calling his teacher "sexy" and requesting a hug. Aaron Perez's mother thought the school's actions were confusing for the child. The mother explained that the child is exposed to the word "sexy" frequently on television and other media sources leading to the misunderstanding and inappropriate usage.

"It was an innocent gesture from him," said his mother, Lira Garcia-Perez. "He doesn't know, if you ask him, 'What does sexy mean?' he says, 'That you're pretty.' "

"The kid feels like he's a criminal," she said. "We told him you did nothing wrong, please don't feel that you're a criminal, because you know, he's afraid now, he doesn't want to have a female teacher. He says, 'Mommy I'm afraid that this is going to happen again, what am I supposed to do?' He's afraid to walk next to a female adult that's not me, his mom. That's the traumatization that he has in his head."

Aaron says his only intention was to wish the teacher a good weekend.

"I got scared when I got suspended and the reason I asked my teacher for a hug was to hope she had a good weekend," Aaron told CBS 2 News.

The principal of Putnam Valley Middle School, Mr. Ed Hallisey, declines to discuss the specifics of the suspension but believes the punishment is appropriate and proportionate for Aaron's misbehavior.

"We dealt with this issue fairly, we dealt with this issue responsibly, we dealt with this issue with parents, and we dealt with this issue swiftly," Hallisey said.

There is no word on whether or not Aaron got the hug.

Awwww poor kid, crushes on teachers are normal. I once thought a teacher was hot and made a casual "slip" in one of my essays, I got an A biggrin... no hug though blackeyed
Seriously, does a 10 year old associate sexy with intercourse? I'm not being rhetorical, I really don't know...

That doesn't seem exactly right, but it's a very strange time we live in. I don't think I would have reacted very differently than the teacher, we have to work very hard to prove we're not perverts lately. I'm not saying it's right to punish a kid for a very innocent mistake, but I can see where this is coming from.

Hmm..perhaps a bit severe punishment for the kid, but parents should acknowledge their children's faults rather than condoning it. Seems like parents these days hate to be held accountable for such things and find it easier to shift the blame to the media and other sources.

Well, thanks to all the teachers who think that a 10 year old calling them sexy means it's time to play with the kid's balls, the rest of the teachers who aren't pervy sickos have to work extra hard to stay above board.

a ten year old calling anyone sexy is hardly sexual harassment.
it isn't even bad parenting. its just some naive kid who thinks his teacher is hot and doesn't even know how to associate such feelings etc etc.

you all get what i'm saying i'm sure.

overreactionary draconian in measure and blatant hyperbolae.

fucking retarded really.

Sounds more like an issue with the Guidance Counselor and parents than him being suspended.

I have a problem with suspension and expulsion from school because in most of these instances you already have a slacker (not in reference to this story) that doesn't want to go to school anyway. So by getting them out of school is like giving them a vacation. There should be better ways of punishment.

I feel sorry for this little kid. Kids hear things and not necessarily knowing what they mean, say it.

Indeedier.

The guidance counselor should have taken this "case."

It IS true that teachers have to be wary, partly due to students, partly due to other teachers' (and parents' and students') misunderstandings; the same goes for health professionals - we sometimes feel we have to walk on eggshells around some of our patients and coworkers, children or not. Patients can get crushes on caregivers like kids on teachers, but TEN YEARS OLD???

I fail to see how a suspension is warranted.

*tries to figure out whether to be angry at suspenders or cry for kid; will likely opt to do both*

This story is bullshit! The kid got suspended big deal. Kids get suspended all the time. The kid shouldn't have been punished, but I don't belive this kid is tramatized over this one thing.

The world has gone completely stark, raving mad. The kid is TEN YEARS OLD, fer chrissake. He used a word that he hears every day - a word that he associated with a compliment - for a pretty teacher that he likes.

All he needed was for his teacher or parent to explain to him that "sexy" is an adult word, and that it doesn't mean "pretty" and that he shouldn't use that word in situations like this. The end.

This whole thing merits the same attention that I saw being given to a youngster in a department store the other day, as his mother was explaining to him the difference between the words "right" and "left." Instead, it's national news.

We're fucked. We're doomed.

don't take chances, castrate the kid, as clearly he will be a pedophile murdering rapist eventually. and probably be mean to small woodland animals too.

way to go to the school for filtering him out early. i'm sure there was some other signs...like him looking around, participating in class, showing up for class. but still, nipped this one in the bud guys!

Sad about the kid...I wonder if the Teacher overreacted and told the princi pal or was this something that could've been handled in house?

How crazy. Kids misuse words all the time, a friend of mine once told her father that she was going to go to another kid's house to have a ménage à trois, having no idea what that actually meant.

It's crazy. I don't doubt that poor kid being traumatized.

YES!

I thought this one was about the male student who did actually have sex with his teacher recently in CA.
This one is totally blown out of proportion.
