Michael Jackson, 48, last night returned to the stage for the first time in nine years for the World Music Awards in Earls Court, London, suffering an embarrassing performance marred by stage fright and inexplicably using R&B singer Chris Brown for his scheduled performance of the song "Thriller".

He had told organisers that he would re-create his Thriller video after being presented with the Diamond Award for selling more than 100 million albums. But the celebrities and public, who had paid up to £70 for a ticket, were left waiting for 30 minutes as Jackson suffered stage fright in his dressing room. Beyoncé, who was being honoured in the show, comforted Jackson and persuaded him to sing.

Thriller was hastily performed as a “tribute” to Jackson by an American singer, Chris Brown. Jackson eventually shuffled on stage to a backing tape playing We Are the World. Accompanied by a group of London schoolchildren, Jackson completed one verse and one chorus.

The eccentric megastar thanked one of his children, whom he called “Blanket”.

I am Chris Brown, for some reason, I am on stage performing "Thriller" instead of Michael Jackson.

What's amusing is that out of all of the R&B artists out today, I actually kind of like Chris Brown (I don't care what anybody says, "Run It" is freakin infectious), so it makes me happy that he was able to perform Thriller.

That said, I can't believe that Michael Jackson fucked this up. I can't believe there wasn't a riot. I would flip if I paid that much for such a small payoff.

I was thinking anyone who actually paid to see that should be refunded... but... I guess that's kinda their own fault.

I think we lost him around the time he went on smashing cars on video... Or maybe it was all the Pepsi.

Either way, the saddest part is, I used to love him too, now I don't even care what he does...

Meh, no worse than Axl Rose. At least he actually came on stage at all.

As much as I think he's a fuck up, I have sympathy for the guy. He's been through a lot of shit lately, and even assuming that he brought it all on himself, it's a bit much to expect him to keep rolling along unaffected by it.

This is why I think child celebrities are a bad idea.

That's just ignorant... (He said it, I didn't). So, who's itching to become the next Little Richard? (or Prince, or Britney) To all of the celebrities who no longer have viable careers, I say, let it go. You had your time, now "Beat It". Why go out like that? It's just as sad as those douchebags from highschool who can't get over their game winning touch down.

That's impressive that Chris Brown, i'm assuming, not only did the performance last minute, but had the lyrics and choreography down.

He has turned out to be a big joke just like Britney Spears. MJ is looking so freakishly lately that I see a striking resemblance between him and the host of Tails of The Crypt.

I love his old music though.

the car-smashing was hot. admit it.

now...it's just so sad. Not sure what he could do to redeem himself at this point, short of giving away what money he might have left and retreating into a Buddhist commune of some sort.
