For maybe a magazine... Or a weekly NYC published guide for example... Like "Time Out New York"

well, it probably varies as much as any other profession...the editor of Rolling Stone is probably going to clear more than say, the music editor of your local music rag.

If you are considering this as a career I might recommend some remedial grammar lessons and proof-reading 101.

I'd be pretty fucking shocked if a music editor for a weekly local magazine made $50k a year.

Little Mayhem.

I had a friend who was the music editor for the daily news for about ten years - shows and record reviews - occasional interviews. He made about $17,500 a year. He suplimented his income by reselling reviews through syndication, doing promotions and eventually became an actor. He now makes $17,500 a year as a bartender and another $20K doing voice overs.

Nice guy. Once took a flight with him to Miami and he introduced me to David Johannson and Chris and Tina from the Talking Heads.

I dont think it is the kind of career you look for an employer, but one where you create your own opportunities. Perhaps you should talk to one of the featured writers on SG.

Also, with that degree you can alwasy go into advertising or public relations or marketing or teaching... and write for fun on the side.

Yeah but Time Out New York actually has national cred and distribution. So the chief music editor might be making a decent salary. But it's probably a side gig anyway.

If he means "music editor" as in the guy in charge of Time Out New York's music section, then I can guarantee that it's over 50 grand.

If he means "music editor" as in a guy who writes for Time Out's music section, then it's well (well) under that.

The big thing to remember is that you'll have to toil for years at very, very little pay writing freelance if you ever want to even smell a job like that.

ugh.

Trying to make a living as a writer is worse than trying to make a living as a musician. And that's saying something.

Well I didn't go for the degree for money, I love writing. I went for the degree because I wanted something to back up my writing, since these days you need a degree for every fucking thing now.... Want to pick up garbage? You need a degree (example). Anyway I guess the only thing going on in my head right about now is; what good paying jobs can I get with that damn degree? Even if it's not a 100% writing job....
