Though talk of a full-length Simpsons movie has surrounded the hit series since its earliest seasons, chatter and rumor consistently failed to result in anything beyond "possibilities" for years and through hundreds of episodes. In fact, it wasn't until the conclusion of the Emmy award winning program's 17th season that a movie was given full confirmation and, beyond that, a release date of July 27, 2007. Now, eight months prior to that date, a brand new trailer is giving fans their first glimpse of completed footage from the film.

The trailer opens to a frolicking CG rabbit, but quickly disposes of the creature and derides the devilish third dimension that spawned it. A brief segment depicting Homer Simpson, the doughy and increasingly idiotic patriarch of the Simpson family, soon follows. One over-extended joke involving a wrecking ball later, and viewers are treated to the release date and the address of the film's website.

Unfortunately, little regarding the film's premise can be garnered from the brief segment beyond the fact that Homer will have to rescue his family and suffer a great deal in the process. Early reports, however, have suggested that fans will be seeing the fallout of an accident at the nuclear power plant that ruins Springfield's drinking water. Needless to say, Homer is found to be the cause of the mishap and is fired. The townspeople, meanwhile, stage a mass exodus.

Leaked footage of animatics for The Simpsons Movie that was displayed at Comic-Con 2006 certainly supports the rumors as it depicts 742 Evergreen Terrace falling before a siege of irate townsfolk crying for Homer Simpson's head.

Additonally, further animatics from the film that were included in the DVD release of X3 reiterate the fact that Homer will be abused a great deal over the course of his big screen adventures.

Though the series has seen its share of criticism, both in its early years at the hands of the likes of George H. W. Bush and in recent time from disillusioned fans who claim the program has lost its edge, the popularity of The Simpsons has endured through 383 episodes and, as evidenced by its 17th season, still allows the program to draw as many as 9.2 million viewers per week. Whether or not these fans will go on to support a major motion picture and sustain television's first family through their 20th anniversary and beyond, however, may still be questionable.

The Simpsons stopped being a good show seasons ago.

Maybe the movie will be better.

Meh, I like the recent seasons, they changed the direction of the show but that's kind of what you'd expect after eighteen seasons.

I'm really really wanting this to be good but I know in my heart it's going to suck. They traded their scathing social commentary and well thought out jokes for cheap slapstick YEARS ago. Fortunately I've got seasons 3-8 to sooth the pain.

Yeah, this movie is 10 years too late. I've actually seen 2 trailers for this so far and I watched each one in disappointed, stoney silence. Now a Futurama movie I'd be open to...

Im gonna say it: The Simpsons is still an amazing show. The humor has gotten weirder and more warped. Evidence A: great line from this season (adapted since exact quote couldn't be found)

Homer: Why does Lenny need a windmill anyways?
Marge: To grind his own corn
Homer: Finally, now maybe he will stop complaining about the high price of cornmeal!

Classic....

I thought that sucked. The premise of the trailer was good, but I'm just over Homer becoming increasinly stupid to the point of it not being funny anymore. And his voice seems to have gotten worse over the last few seasons. More gutteral or something.
