It's not like I told him to go pick up Nocturne or Rule of Rose, but now that I'm thinking about it both of them would be great to play if you can find them.

Heh. I've got 2 copies of Nocturne in my store right now, and at least that many Rule of Rose.
do not play the PS2 version of this game, it has some of the worst loading times and awful controls. 6 buttons just to shoot someone is wrong.
Well, I have the original Gamecube version. But it's available on PS2 if you don't have any other option, and I think it's neat enough that it would be worth struggling with a flawed port, again, if you had to.
I hear Scarface is supposed to be really good. I bought a copy at a Black Friday sale, but I have yet to try it, because I am obsessing over Oblivion again.
I would not go so far as to describe Scarface as "really good", but it does a better GTA clone than most and it's leaps and bounds better than most licensed games. I think the big thing it does right is to avalanche you with perks and things to incentivize earning cash, which becomes the central focus of the gameplay. GTA, I've yet to find compelling reasons to try and earn cash (it's practically thrown at you in the first two games and there wasn't much to spend it on. San Andreas managed it better but the track racing makes it easy to amass a fortune given a starting nest egg.). I did the missions because they were there and I wanted to progress in the game. Scarface, I do the missions because they pay me, get me reputation and balls, and unlock sources of even bigger payouts, more toys to play with, and so on. By the time you've cleared the first neighborhood (which is where I'm at) you've moved from petty dealing to drug distribution and while it gets a lot trickier to pull off, your profits skyrocket. And never fear, there's plenty to sink that ill-earned cash right back into...
It's a pretty sweet setup. The problem for me is that it's not very forgiving. Getting into all out gunfights (which you pretty much have to quite regularly, despite a half-assed cover mechanic) can drain your health real fast, and health packs are few and far between. There's no armor like GTA has, either. There *is* the Blind Rage mode, but the problem is, the meter for that clears when you load a game, whether it be after dying or simply to pick back up after spending time on something else. And it can be overly difficult to build back up in the middle of getting shot to bits. Also, the distribution missions can get rough. I quit in frustration after one run had my last front attacked by a gang of guys and in the process of blowing them all to hell I attracted police attention and had to run for it. By the time I got away, another gang had attacked the front. And sure enough, disposing of them meant police attention. This time the police shot the tires out on my car and you can't switch cars for the distribution missions (the money and drugs are stored in the car). So I got away on foot, but then I couldn't get the car repaired or the mission finished (because I was so slow because of the shot tires) before some jackass came up and blew the car to bits, failing the mission. I also don't like the police mechanics: it's a bit too easy to get into the mode where you have to run away within a certain time limit or you just up and die. There's no fighting back.
I wouldn't do it on console, though. Manual aim is key to getting the most out of the balls system and gamepads are not designed for that.
