After years of anticipation, the increasingly inaccurately named Wachowski "Brothers" have finally announced their directorial follow-up to the much beloved and maligned (and, ultimately, forgettable) Matrix trilogy. The project will be a big screen remake of Tatsuo Yoshida's Mach Go Go Go or, as it's known in the United States, Speed Racer.

Speed Racer will mark a reunion of sorts as it brings a large portion of the creative talent responsible for The Matrix and its sequels back together. In addition to the Wachowskis, executive producer Grant Hill and visual effects supervisor John Gaeta will be returning along with Matrix trilogy producer Joel Silver, the man responsible for making the possibility of a Speed Racer film a reality.

It was actually Silver who, after working with the Wachowskis on V for Vendetta, brought the two into the fold. Naturally, their participation was conditional upon being able to bring something of their own to the project.

"They are approaching these racing scenes in a way you've never seen before," said Silver, adding that the brothers are designing the movie's look as they write. Silver also said that unlike the more adult-oriented material of the Wachowskis' past -- "Vendetta," the "Matrix" movies and "Bound" were all rated R -- "Speed" will be family-friendly.

"They wanted to do something that could appeal to everybody," Silver said.

Best known for its fast paced racing and faster paced dialogue, Speed Racer was one of the first examples of anime finding success in the U.S. market. Though the phenomena has since become the norm with imported shows such as Pokemon and Naruto achieving popularity that overshadows even native animated programming, attempts to revive the Speed Racer franchise with remakes of the original cartoon have thus far not met with the same success. This will be the first attempt to translate Speed Racer into a live-action format.

Could the Mach 5 be a parasitic cyber-organism bent on world domination, or has the world perhaps already fallen?

File this hed under "nightmare fuel".

I don't want to think of the Wachowski Bros. double-teaming anything; not even a buffet.

I've never seen Speed Racer. I neither hate nor love this idea. I am apathetic.

+1

But, if they use the Sponge version of the show's theme for the film's score/soundtrack, I will endorse this movie.

SPONGE.

I always liked speedracer as a kid...lots of racing..someone ALWAYS died...usally going off a cliff...or into a wall. No one ever got cut in half by that dual saw blades they had on the front of it though... On a related note..when they reshowed them again on cartoon network again when I was older..they had edited all the scenes..so that the cars going off cliffs had the piliots get out with parasuits...thought that was funny. Apparently kids cannot handle the idea that all those drivers were going to die....how things change....

I loved this show.

But they must follow up with the big screen adaptation of Gatchaman (G-Force).

"Speed Racer will mark a reunion of sorts as it brings a large portion of the creative talent responsible for The Matrix and its sequels back together." When I read that the first thing I though was Keanu Reeves as Speed Racer. LOL

Also, I'm glad someone else thinks that the Transformers Movie is gonna bomb. Michael Bay is a hack.

Ok so let's score the tally shall we:

Michael Bay - Hack

Wachowski Brothers - Overrated

Michael Mann - Asshat who made Bad Boys III without the humor.

I'll be surprised if I feel compelled to watch this movie on DVD two years from when it is released.

You have to imagine this being said in excited monotone by someone with only two frames of animation...
