I went to go see Saw 3 last night and fainted during the piercings scene. I guess the thought of ripping a steel ring out of your mouth by breaking your jaw in half just made me a touch queasy
A buddy of mine was listening to the radio today, and heard that this is happening to a lot of people. Apparently 3 people in the UK had to be hospitalized for it.

I'd have wondered if the whole thing might be a publicity thing, but you're a real live person so I guess not.
It's weird because I'm usually never affected by stuff like this. I thought Saw 1 was a bit gross but an entertaining movie. I was eating theatre popcorn at the time, so maybe that had something to do with it
I remember when Pulp Fiction was out, there were several theaters who elected to have ambulances standing by. Probably this was for publicity's sake but also there had been several cases where people fainted during the scene where Vincent was shooting up and where Mia was revived.
Yes, it is bizarre how relative things can be. Medical staff with smelling salts were a common gimmick with the early Universal horror films, such as Dracula. They cut loads of little things from the original Frankenstein, like the shot of the monster being injected with a tranquilizer, because they'd be too much for the sensibilities of the adult audiences of the time.
Into the 60's studios were getting great audience responses from the old 'hand from darkness over the shoulder' trick. People in the test viewings would say they loved the film with the 'hand' moment being their favorite bit.
Back in the 70's Christopher Lee Dracula films were getting adult only ratings, now they're shown on TV in the middle of the afternoon. Unless there are breast shots.
Mental. I've never heard of anyone actually fainting - or even freaking out massively - during any movie. I thought it was a myth that marketing people put out there.

a couple of people fainted at the reading i went to. one of them fell over and hit his head on the chair next to him. it was pretty crazy, and i seriously doubt it was staged.
as for saw 3, i don't think anyone fainted in the theatre i was in. i'm usually big on scary movies, but saw 3 actually got to me. i'm still sore from all the cringing. the editing, though, made me want to throw up. enough with the flashbacks to scenes that occured just minutes prior! arrrgh!

Nobody noticed me faint... my buddy who was sitting next to me didn't even find out until I told him after the movie was over. He said he glanced over, saw my head drooped down, and just figured that I was looking away from the screen.
Oh and by the way...
