After fifty years on television, Bob Barker announced plans to retire. As of June, he will give up his “Price is Right” gig, which he held for over thirty-five years. He admitted hosting the show is "demanding physically and mentally."

"I'm just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me," he said. "I might be able to do the show another year, but better (to leave) a year too soon than a year too late."

Don’t let that statement confuse you; Barker said he loves the job so much, he couldn’t give it up earlier. He said he considered retirement for the past ten years, but he couldn’t say goodbye to the “showcase showdowns.”

"I've gone on and on and on to this ancient age because I've enjoyed it," he said. "I've thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm going to miss it."

Barker has shit on the horizon to keep him busy; the host said he would like to do a movie, provided it measures up to his strict "Price is Right" standards.

"I refuse to do nude scenes. These Hollywood producers want to capitalize on my obvious sexuality, but I don't want to be just another beautiful body."

Barker enjoyed a huge following over the years. He first picked up fans in the 1950’s as the host of "Truth or Consequences." He began hosting “The Price is Right” on September 4, 1972, which expanded his fan base. Barker said he is grateful for his fans’ support.

Barker said he "doesn't have the words" to express his gratitude.
"From the bottom of my heart, I thank the television viewers, because they have made it possible for me to earn a living for 50 years doing something that I thoroughly enjoy. They have invited me into their homes daily for a half a century."

Barker doesnÂ’t want his fans to worry; he has several good years ahead.

"I will be 83 years old on December 12," he said, "and I've decided to retire while I'm still young."

And still able to harass the chicks who are stuck working for him, I presume.

I grew up watching that show with my grandparents before they took me to afternoon kindergarten. When I go home for the holidays I stay at my grandmas house and I won't make plans to meet anyone until after we have watched The Price Is Right.

The Price is Right cured every cold I had as a child.

Rumor has it he will be replaced by Dave Price of the CBS morning show. Apparently, the deal has been in the works for some time that Dave would take over once Bob Barker retired... but Dave Price has waited several years and threatened to take another gig. So the Price is Right offered Bob Barker a retirement package he couldn't refuse... which he will likely donate to animal friendly causes.

Ah! It all makes sense now.

By the way I always hated Plinko. I liked the one with the yodeling guy.

Also, I still don't really know what a baker's rack is but they damn sure gave a lot of them away on TPIR.

35 years and some people still haven't figured out that the first Showcase sucks compared to the second one (and the second one always had a cute/lame story about Johnny and the models).

still, DocGonzo, have to admit he's rather good at it...

and yeah, this is definetly the end of an era... we'll certainly miss him... though it was about time he retired, at 83... he still looks good for someone who's 83 but it's about time he left someone else do it... though no one will do it like Bob !
