I'm lost
September 2005

I live in Portland, which simply has to be the home of dreds on caucasians. Am I the only one who thinks they look ridiculous on about 80% of people out there?

Much like a mullet, I believe that people get so attached to their identity as a dredder, that they can't let go. It also doesn't help that you basically have to shave yer head.

Mullets look good on hockey players, and the occasional butch, and dreds look good on members of throw-back Ska band members and the occasional SG, and that's about it.

Of course, what you've got to remember is that dreadlocks are more than just a hairstyle for some people. For many, they are an expression of spiritual beliefs and have been for thousands of years. To insinuate that people shouldn't wear their hair in locks just because they are white is stupid. The peoples of gaul wore dreads, as did the ancient brythons, and lets not forget the hindus - wandering hindu holy men known as sadhus wear dreads as an outward display of their ascetic lifestyles. Nazirite jews and christians wear their hair unshorn, and a fair proportion interpret that by wearing dreads.

Sometimes a hairstyle is more than just an aesthetic thing, y'know.

besides all of the reasons that James_ listed, there's a lot of work that goes into making dreads. a mullet can be cut in about three minutes. dreads take lots of care and time and it's only natural that the people that spent all the effort in creating them become attached to them.

I'm right there with you. I live in PDX too & it's getting worse by the hour. It would make it better if more people who like that style bathed & didn't smell like shit while begging for money/pot on hawthorne.

Filthy, stinky hippies with dreads are everywhere. I have to admit, I'm not sure which is worse - the body odor or the pachuli (sp?) stank?

I don't give a shit what you want to look like, wear or style your hair - JUST PRACTICE GOOD HYGENE!

I think dreads are cute. But as far as the spirituality argument goes, I think most of the time it's bunk. If you have one that is legitimate I am more than willing to listen (the general you, not the James you). Enthusiastic, in fact. I love to hear about spiritual beliefs I havan't been exposed to. Most of the time, though, rather than identifying with a particular spirituality, if white people with dreads are trying to identify with anything it's with Bob Marley, smoking pot and Rastafarianism by extension. I do think that's stupid. For a white person to talk about Jah at all strikes me as a base appropriation and a gross misunderstanding of what Rastifarianism stands for. Don't get me wrong, I love Bob Marley. I even read a book of Halle Salasie's speeches once. From what I understand (and my understanding is admittedly limited) Rastafarianism is an inherently African (or black) religion. It's all about Pan-Africanism and black power. If you need an example of this, listen to Bob Marley's song War which just so happens to be taken nearly verbatim for a speech HIM gave. Again, don't get me wrong, I think that's awesome. Ethiopia was, after all, the only country in Africa to avoid European colonization and was an example of strength and independence for the rest of the continent. I just don't know that a white kid from a sub-urb of PDX really has a right to identify. Support, sure. Identify, no.
But yeah, I think dreads are cute and as long as you don't have a half-assed relgious defense I'm all about 'em. And James, don't take this as an attack. I'm fully convinced there might be valid spiritual reasons for a white person to have dread-locks. I just haven't ever had one spelled out for me.

it's just a trend for the most part and a stage certain 18-23 year olds in certain towns (like portland) go through. most people i knew who went through the dread stage got rid of them by 26 or so. once the career/family stuff starts.

once again sweeping generalizations are made based on the relatively small group of people that you've been in contact with. nicely done, i guess.

what am i generalizing about now, dove? as i said, "most people i knew". i didn't say "most people in the whole world".

i'm a little older than you, and had the chance of growing up with a whole shitload of people with dreadlocks at one time or another. almost everybody ***********i************* knew had them at one stage in their life. and now that we're all a little older, turning into moms and dads and whatever, the dreadlocks are **********poof********* gone!! and it seemed to happen around 26/27 for just about everybody!

i was sharing my own experience. and it's pretty true that certain TOWNS are full of dreadlockers. even over here. more hippie towns/university towns/beach towns/artsy towns have more dreadlocked people on bikes. this is really a generalization? more like a fact. there are certain towns in italy that were FULL of people with dreadlocks. the relatively small group of people that i've been in contact with includes my observations of lots of different towns in lots of different countries, actually.

so whatever.

^ this was your generalization, just so you know.

whatever indeed. your personal observations do not equal fact. your personal thoughts on when and why people get rid of a certain hairstyle do not equal fact. so your older and wiser anectdotes equal exactly bunk.

i don't really feel like having a heated argument in a thread about dreadlocks of all things. i was merely pointing out that just because you have certain perceptions about people that you've met doesn't mean that you know anything about dreads or the people that choose to have them.

i never said i really knew anything about dreads. growing up with a bunch of white middle class people meant dreads were more of a fashion statement. they liked the dead, or pot, or bob marley, or spinning hip-hop, or nag champa. or something.

i really don't know why people have dreads. i always assumed if it's for spirital/religious/cultural reasons you don't cut them. enlighten me.
