Pete Townsend bailed on an interview for Howard Sterns satellite radio show after the jock brought up a touchy subject for Townsend. Stern scheduled a live interview with Townsend speaking from his London studio. Townsend, along with his girlfriend Rachel Fuller and Who bandmate Roger Daltrey, tuned into the station shortly before his interview. Unfortunately, Townsend got an earful as Stern discussed Townsends 2003 child-porn arrest, for which he was never charged.
Co-host Robin Quivers brought up the "child pornography stuff" and Townshend's claims that he was abused as a child. "Oh yeah, we could ask him about that," Stern said.
Townsend stormed out of his studio, while Fuller and Daltrey stayed to talk to Stern. Daltrey stuck up for his homeboy, even lashing out at Stern, accusing him of "sniffing dirty underpants."
"Can you imagine you're accused of this stuff and then you're found not guilty? If you had to defend yourself through this stuff? The wounds are so deep on the man, and it's just tragic because he's got so much to offer," he said.
Stern, who jokingly referred to Fuller as "Yoko" after it was mentioned that Fuller had co-written a song on the new Who album, wound up apologizing to Townshend.
"Tell Pete I am very sorry," he said. "We would have had a great interview with him. I really wish he'd reconsider this. We adore him."
Townsends reps declined to comment on the incident.
Sorry, Pete. I love you to death, but you should have known Howard would bring it up. Daltry and Townsend.
Wait I am really confused... I thought Pete came out of the closet(gay) like ten years ago. Yet.. "Townsend, along with his girlfriend Rachel Fuller and Who bandmate Roger Daltrey, tuned into the station shortly before his interview."
The rough boy behind blue eyes does not make things better -you bet- for himself or his generation if he still has an emminece front (beard) girlfriend.
I would not say that I 'stormed out' of an interview with Howard Stern, I would say that I walked away. I am not angry with Howard or his team and they have a perfect right to discuss my sexual past whenever they choose, I am a public person. I decided not to join what was developing into a light-hearted inquisition of sexual subjects that cause widely felt discomfort when not seriously addressed. The story of my life is as yet untold. Until I complete my memoirs I rely on my family, friends, fans and colleagues to believe in me almost unconditionally. Anyone unwilling to wait for my story must address the facts at hand and make their own decision. I was cleared of all charges brought against me. The caution I received was mandatory because I admitted using a credit card as part of a wider research exercise intended to gather evidence to present to various finance and internet companies to persuade them to try harder to prevent the use of children in the pornography industry. These are the facts.
For the record, I no longer lobby publicly about this issue, but I continue to underwrite organisations that support adult 'survivors' of childhood abuse.
I heard it, and personally, I think Pete overreacted to the situation a bit. The Daltrey interview was great, though.
huzzah Dr. Ness. ... i heard it too... i think pete had to know howard would talk about it... but you know.. i think the who needs a good press agent to handle that shit ahead of time.
but for Pete Townshend.... He 's still responsible from some of the best rock ever (Sell Out, Tommy) and the worst...(By Numbers... It's Hard)
