U.K. renegade artist Banksy struck again. The controversial artist copied a Warhol screen print, managing to make a fortune selling it at a Sotheby's auction. Bansky re-envisioned Warhol's screen print into a series featuring Kate Moss. A Sotheby's rep described the subsequent bidding as "frenzied."

The six silkscreen prints of the Croydon-born beauty, which reflect Andy Warhol's iconic Marilyn Monroe series, prompted frenzied bidding at Sotheby's modern art sale. Originally valued at £10,000 they eventually fetched £50,000; the winning bid coming from a US-based private collector.

Moss was said to be thrilled to be featured in Banksy's paintings.

Sotheby's representative Elli Varnavides described the outcome of the sale as "spectacular." "I believe Kate Moss was happy about Banksy using her image in an iconic way," she added.

Very good pictures! smile

Even if it is of Kate Moss, who is dating the world's most useless excuse for a human being (Pete Doherty of course). But she suits the style of this - good stuff, Banksy! smile

Funny she's so happy about it. Obviously the point of the piece kind of went over her head.
The reprinting is about dehumanizing people through media and image.
Oh well, at least she's happy.

As much as I ADORE Banksy, this is probably the least impressive thing I've seen or heard of him doing. Every artist has bitten off of Warhol's famous prints. Come on, even Apple has this feature in their new Photo Booth app. Tim Gaskin's 'Superstar Collection' beats this by far.

Hardly groundbreaking, hardly worth mentioning.

People are getting so rough about Banksy now that he's such a big deal. His work is still just as wonderfully subversive as ever, but the hipsters knew about him years ago, so they're not up for giving him any credit. And because they have only the fleetingest knowledge—stretched thin as a whisper, no less—of art history, can't begin to realize what an astonishing work this is.

The Botticelli-style painting is pretty good too, but doesn't quite operate on as many levels as Banksy's.

I'm with lil_tuffy on this.

You can't tell me what he did is ground breaking or even subversive! I like Banksy. But there is nothing impressive about what he did with the Moss prints.

And to say that people are getting rough on Banksy because he is a 'such a big deal'...I disagree completely. There is a line between innovative and overdone. Banksy is tip toeing if not jumping to the overdone side. Taking a stunt that was done in 1993 and re-envisioning it for 2006 is something to talk about...and everyone did!

"In 1993 pranksters outraged toymaker Mattel by swapping
the voice boxes of Barbie and GI Joe action figures and
putting them back on shop shelves in a spot of gender-
bending activism which had Barbie declaring war and GI
Joes suggesting shopping trips to confused children.

The culprits, self-styled Barbie Liberation
Organisation, now operating under the moniker of The
Yes Men, are the two American anti-corporate activists
who last week embarrassed the BBC with the Dow Chemical
Bhopal apology hoax."

Call me a hipster lacking any knowledge of art and it's history, but explain how something as overplayed as replicating a Warhol print is noteworthy?

While the irony is kinda funny, in the same right, it's very boring, in that it's obvious, NOT inventive ( I mean, jesus, yes, we get it all ready, kate moss blah blah blah...) but the whole thing is just kinda bland.....sorry...

I like it! At first I hated it cause I thought it was unoriginal and also being an image of Kate Moss. But look at this conversation that has come out of it. He made people talk and feel and as "simple" and "unoriginal" it may be, it has more impact then many other more orignal paintings. I like how it offends and has caused these uproars. To me thats art, but thats just me. nobzeybiggrin

yeah... I'm kind of confused as top why this is a big deal. That's not very original and I'm kind of wondering where the profit actually went from the sale.

Psshhh, you just don't get it man, you'll never understand because you don't have the background I do.

There's all these levels operating that only I can see, and can't hope to explain to all these plebians who DON'T have art history knowledge!

I don't see anybody in this thread that are offended. Just saying this is an artistic non-event.

Art is making something unoriginal and getting people to say its unoriginal? Shit, I should be an artist, I'd be the next Van Gogh. Matter of fact, I'm gonna go get some V-G prints to trace!

It may have already been said but there is a comment in the sale and the prices fetched. And beyond that, what will he be able to do with the extra cash? capital can lead to profit and in the art world we all win. eleveneleven

Well played, Banksy. You got some idiot to pay a lot of money for an unoriginal, unremarkable work, and created more buzz for yourself in the process. Well played social commentary, sir. I'm sure you're laughing all the way to the bank.
