The smokers I know either love smoking and don't give a shit, act like they don't give a shit, or are always struggling with the concept of divorcing their blackening lungs from the sweet, sweet nicotine. Need some data backing up the immediate benefits from dropping the smokes?

Here it is from Healthbolt :

* In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.
* In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.
* In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.
* In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.
* In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.
* In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.
* In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.
* In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
* In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
* In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

The data fails to acknowledge the other effects of quitting smoking:
a) Becoming a raging asshole/bitch for undetermined amount of time
b) Nagging suicide fantasies
c) Gradual end to "vibey" wheezing death cough
d) Not looking as cool as you did when you smoked, sorry
e) Need to find new ways to abort boring conversations (no more smoke breaks)
f) Living long enough to eventually hate the fact that you're still alive

I quit 4 years ago, after smoking a pack a day for 10 years. Another great side effect is that you can actually taste food about 2-3 months after you quit.

You know, that never happened to me. Everyone kept warning me about that; I was nearly a pack-a-day smoker for a couple years before I quit. But once I quit: no black goo. No yellow or green goo, either.

Lucky me, eh?

According to the article it only takes 48 hours. Are you lying about smoking just to be one of the "I-used-to-be-cool" kids?

Yeah, I miss that. Smoke breaks were always a good way to be less awkward at social events, too; I'm a lot more awkward now that I have to hang out and just interact the whole time. Now what am I supposed to do while I'm talking? Gosh.

I could have tarred a roof with my morning hackings for at least a week. Consider yourself lucky I guess. It was pretty gross.

Let's not forget getting fat again when you quit. Isn't that why a lot of girls start smoking, to keep thin? A friend of mine (a guy, admittedly) said he put on 20 pounds after he quit. I told him he was just a lazy bastard. He started running and lost 30 pounds.

Actually, I lost weight when I quit smoking.

What I miss most about smoking is smoke breaks at work. People know that you MUST have a smoke break every so often, no matter how busy the night is. Nonsmokers don't get those little 5 minute breaks. For a while after I quite, I would pretend that I still smoked juist so I could get a break and sit down for a couple minutes.

I had a friend who started smoking because that annoyed him so much. Now he's the biggest smoker I know.

Though I smoked in high school, I quit before I joined the Army. When I got to my first duty station I saw that the guys who smoked always got breaks so I started smoking again.
Many years later, it is not somuch that way in the military and I wish I could quit. If I could only get the support from home

I quit (from a pack every month or so, down from 2 packs a day a few years back) last August, and it's really amazing how much better, overall, I feel. What really amazes me is how great the difference between one cigarette per day and no cigarettes per day is.

Of course, it's so amazing that I find myself slipping into those "rabid anti smoker" lectures with my smoker-friends, which I never enjoyed hearing while I smoked. Hell, I think of smokers in a very different light - it's weird how my opinion of smokers and smoking has changed so dramatically since I ceased to be one.

Anyway, if you smoke, I advise you to quit for a while and see how you like it. If you don't, go ahead a smoke again, but you owe it to yourself to see what it's like.

This is why so many people in the military smoke. When you're the only person in the shop who doesn't smoke, you figure it out after a few months of being the only one doing any work.
