Some orphans from Africa accused Warner Bros of some serious douchebag behavior. For the filming for Leonardo DiCaprio’s film, Blood Diamond, the studio brought in twenty-seven orphaned amputees as extras for hospital scenes in the movie. Warner Bros promised to provide the kids with prosthetic limbs as part of their compensation for the appearances. Although filming wrapped in June, the children haven’t received their limbs yet.

Young Nkululo Mnisi - whose arms and legs were cut off by machete-wielding rebels - used to be taunted by cruel classmates as "baboon" because of the way he ran on his stumps and crutches. Mnisi told a South African newspaper that the dream that kept him going was the promise of getting artificial limbs so he'd be able to play soccer like a normal child.

But months after filming ended, Mnisi and his fellow amputees were still waiting. When they asked Warner Bros. about the promised prosthetics, they were allegedly told, "You will have to wait for December, when the movie comes out, so we can get some publicity out of it."

When contact by The New York Post, a Warner Bros rep responded, "We're working on it." While studio assholes “work on it,” someone else stepped up to help the kids.

A local African charity, Eastern Cape, came to the rescue when it heard of the amputees' cruelly dashed hopes, and outfitted them with limbs paid for by the organization. Eastern Cape has said that if Warner Bros. does finally come through with the money, it will go to 27 other deserving amputees.

Way to go, Warner Brothers: another reason for us to hate large movie studios.

With any luck the bad press will force WB to do something really huge for the kids there.

There's a special place in hell, and Warner Bros is driving the bus. Poor kids, to go through what they have and STILL have more disappointments to come.

We should all be thankful for the organizations driven by souls like Eastern Cape. Dollar-driven mega studios like the WB...there really just aren't words...

After following a bit of the press on it, I finally saw this trailer in the theatre recently. It's interesting that the diamond organizations worldwide have been pushing to have the film released AFTER Christmas, because they're worried about the financial fall-out to their industry. I say "interesting" because if the trailer is any indication, people will have forgotten about this film by the time they leave the theatre. Those same people who still drive gas-guzzling SUVs after being "horrified" by An Inconvenient Truth will buy diamonds the day after watching Blood Diamond.

Diamonds are only valuable because the industry says they are valuable. They are a dime a dozen in Africa. If we could look beyond our consumptive "American" ideals and stop buying diamonds there would be millions of human rights attrocities prevented and only a comparatively few "bummed-out" investors.

It's such a large result from such a small deed. Spread the word.

Diamonds are shit.

Just wait a few more months, sad little orphaned amputees. A few more months of misery means nothing to you! After all, you've already lived through years of it.

What complete and total sickos. I'm glad they're getting the publicity for this that they deserve.

I'm trying to find Eastern Cape on the net, to see about a donation, but my quick search on a slow computer is turning up next to nothing. Can anyone have any better luck? Thanks in advance.

That's actually a damn good idea. I also looked and all I could find out is that the Eastern Cape of South Africa is the poorest region in the country. No link to a Eastern Cape charity though =/ I'm thinking it's gonna be a tough find
