In his ongoing effort to prove himself as more than just Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe announced he’s accepted an edgy role in the London stage drama, Equus. Radcliffe signed on to portray a “troubled young man with a religious-erotic obsession with horses.” According to the an upcoming issue of Newsweek, the actor agreed to perform a nude scene in the production.

“Part of me wants to shake up people’s perception of me, just shove me in a blender,” he told the magazine in an exclusive interview on the set of the fifth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

“It’s a really challenging play, and if I can pull it off — we don’t know if I can yet — I hope people will stop and think, ’Maybe he can do something other than Harry,”’ he said.

Is it wrong for me to be a little psyched to see Harry Potter’s schlong? I hope not.

Hahaha that last line made me laugh quite a lot.

I'm sure a lot of people will see him in a different light after that role...

Well, it's sort of a sex scene anyway, so you never know.

But, as I've said before, I really hope he can pull off this part. Alan Strang, from what I've seen, is an extremely difficult character to play, and it just seems like a huge freaking jump to go from one role to the next.

There's something weird about watching Daniel Radcliffe pretend to bone someone on stage, but each to their own I suppose.

I can understand his wish to do something that stretches his talents, but I wonder if he should have waited until after the Harry Potters were done--for the sake of kids? Not that kids will see the play, nec., but they will probably hear about it. Hm.

Equus is one creepy-ass play. As Kleio said, it's a hugely different role, and I wonder how easy such a shift is after four movies as one character.

I have never figured out if the term schlong indicates a certain measure of size or if it is just another word for penis.

He's pretty stiff still in the Harry Potter films. He improved when Chris Columbus stopped directing, but I haven't seen any of the kids show what I would consider formidable acting talent. Theater strikes me as being obviously more organic, but also more of a challenge. I've never tried either, so this obviously isn't written in stone, but a whole lot of the best actors I can think of come from a theater background. That, and it strikes me that you can break character and give it another go in film, but if you fuck up in theater, you have to be able to just roll with it. Plus speak loudly enough so that everyone can hear and not sound unnatural, play off other people's mistakes...it just generally seems like it's for the experts. Which is partially why seeing a great play is absolutely spectacular.
