I know that I spend entirely too much time online. There is a pretty good chance that I have a pretty hardcore internet addiction. I get online, log into my messenger to see if my husband is on, and immediately pop up 2 websites: BBC online and SG.
I flip through threads I've already posted on, check out any new ones, and peek through the day's headlines. Sometimes, I do this for hours. I do it at work, at home, sometimes even at friend's houses.
I've found out that I am not alone.
More than one in eight adults in the US show signs of being addicted to the internet, a study has shown.
"Addicts" showed signs of compulsive internet use, habitually checking e-mail, websites and chat rooms.
More than 8% of the 2,513 respondents to the Stanford University phone survey said they hid their use from partners
A typical addict is a single, white college-educated male in his 30s, who spends more than 30 hours a week on "non-essential" computer use, it found.
The problem has become so great that clinics are being opened to deal with internet addiction. But everyone is not so sure if it is actually a new addiction, or a manisfestation of other mental problems.
However, researchers say it is not clear whether compulsive internet use is a distinct problem or an expression of other underlying problems such as obsessive compulsive disorders.
From a study of 2,513 people:
The results showed that nearly 14% of respondents found it difficult to stay away from the internet for periods of several days.
Almost 6% said they felt their wanderings in cyberspace adversely affected their relationships with other people.
Nearly 8% of people said they went online to escape real world problems.
Behaviour like this, the researchers said, show similarities with other types of addictions such as alcoholism. Other parallels include hiding their online behaviour.
So, who is up for a support group? I'll email you the time & place.
Haha, I have to move you from coke to crack my friend, on a PC you can just hit 'F5'
I also have the "Go Back' and 'Go Forward' buttons toggled to the buttons on either side of my mouse. Other people use the mouse and it drives them crazy
I need to find a replacement mouse, because this one is wireless and it has too much latency in FPS games, but I can't find one that has a button on either side like my old school "micro innovations" mouse does and is wired

But if you watch more than 30 hours of TV a week that's OK, right?
Seriously. TV isolates people, at least on the internet you can pretend to have a life
I think the solution isn't less time spent on the internet, its more bringing the internet to everywhere else.
Anywhere people can bring a folded up newspaper you should be able to have full and complete access to the net, at the exact same level of interactivity and computing power as you currently have at home. Problem Solved!

this is what i have. it's a great mouse, but because it's ambidextrous, the side buttons take a little getting used to.

Omg thats perfect. Thats the problem I have, is I only use ambidextrous mouses, and the regular crazy "ergonomic" shaped right hand ones are impossible for me to use. Thanks!
In my experience, if it is "ergonomic" its just plain retardedly uncomfortable.
the side buttons take a little getting used to.
Yeah, thats what I was talking about other people freaking out when they tried to use my current mouse. They try to lift it up and push all the buttons. But I don't have that problem.
you will not be disappointed my friend. i remember making the switch from a basic optical mouse to the razer and immediately i noticed the difference. it's definitely helped out my game.

Yup... gives me a serious gaming boner. Combined with my Belkin Nostromo N52 gaming device and I'm a fraggin' mofo!
