I always try, futilly of course, to pluck it out with my fingernails. Fortunately my face isn't big on growing hair, so it's really just a matter the level of patchyness...

pisses me off
That's easily remedied by rubbing a moistened hand against the grain to feel for a rough spot. I have to shave before work every morning and that's how I find the missed spots.
When that happens, I'm never sure if I've missed a patch, or it's just grown back unnaturally quickly. I think my facial hair is evil and cannot be trusted.
