Madonna took the next step toward having her third child;the child she hand-picked from a group of African children boarded a plane Monday to make their way to England.

The boy, David Banda, was accompanied on the plane by two Britons and two Americans, one of whom listed her occupation as nanny, according to the immigration official at the airport who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The Malawian immigration official said Monday that though he saw only a U.S. visa in the child's passport, he understood from those traveling with David that they were headed to England, where Madonna has a home, via South Africa.

Madonna faced harsh criticism over the adoption from human rights groups. The groups insisted the singer is only allowed to adopt because of her vast wealth, and not necessarily because it’s in the best interest of the child.

Boniface Mandere of Eye of the Child, a local child protection society involved in the challenge, told The Associated Press earlier Monday: "The court seems to have made a decision based on Madonna's wealth. But being a good parent is not about money, it is about caring, having heart, it's about love."

The groups petitioned Malawi’s courts in an effort to prevent Madonna from taking the child home.

Human rights groups want Malawi's courts to review a ruling allowing Madonna to adopt the child from this impoverished, AIDS-stricken southern African country, saying they want to ensure child protection regulations were not swept aside to benefit a pop star who has been generous to the country.

The Malawi High Court granted preliminary custody to Madonna and her film director husband Guy Ritchie on Thursday, even though the law requires would-be parents to live in the country for a year while social welfare officers investigate their ability to care for a child.

Justin Dzonzi, a lawyer for a coalition of human rights and child advocacy organizations, said his group had filed documents Monday asking a judge to review the adoption.

It appears the attempts were fruitless; the child is allegedly in the custody of Madonna’s and her husband.

No word on which fake accent the kid’s dialect coach will teach.

i'm not sure how i feel about this. beautiful celebrities essentially hand-picking their village boy of choice? is this a fad? choosing which poor child to make a mountain out of. every kid deserves a chance.. but i'm not sure this gives out the right idea

the problem is that she was above the law.
they ignored the regulations everyone else has to follow just because she is rich.

I'm probably gonna get hit with a brick for saying this, but ...

... when you're rich they don't have to investigate if you are able to care for a child. If you can shelter and provide for, you're good. If parenting was what they cared about they wouldn't go after Madonna, they'd go after the Nanny.

... and for another brick ...

... why the hell are they going to Africa for these kids? Madonna and Angelina are both from the US, where there are about 90 bajillion kids in foster care and group homes. That's like fighting in a war you have nothing to do with ...

... but what do I know?

"...like fighting in a war you have nothing to do with"?

we need to be interested in eachother's welfare where ever there are people in need. fuck borders. fuck looking out for your own.the thing to be concerned with is how. socially speaking, we address MASS ills like foster and orphaned children in the U.S. or the west. Madonna is not a social agency, and no one individual is a social agency. societies ills obviously need to be adressed collectively.

what i tought was bizarre about the situation was that the child still has a living parent, his father. when i heard the child was living in an orphanage, i assumed his parents were dead. turns out the child's father is alive and well, but is so incredibly poor, he simply cannot care for his son. so he turned the child over to an orphanage.
the above is what the father claims, if it's true then what a terrible choice to have to make.

i did hear a viewpoint that Madonna ought to have given the father "some" money. the idea was that she could still show this child some love and also maintain a family structure.

i thought it was a good idea, but maybe it isn't. what if the father just gets used to receiving a subsidy and doesn't provide for his families means on his own?

it's a complicated issue, anyone who wants to pretend that it's not a complex issue with a lot of reasonable viewpoints, is probably just interested in Madonna bashing, or rich people bashing.

Madonna did a good thing here people, the world needs more compassion.

I'm glad she didn't crucify herself for no reason and all, but I feel really bad for the kid. From all I've heard, she's a nazi of a mother considering she was sexy mchotty in the 80s. Gross.

All this talk of Madonna and why she adopted that child, is awful. Can you imagine doing something that you think is good, doing something you want for your family and yourself, then having it torn to peices by anyone and everyone with an oppinion. So what if she skipped the que, so what if the govermant is making special rules with her. Well people money buys you that the privlege of jumping ques, laws ect. (People with money get away with murder, rape, theft, a whole lot of shit their lawyers can buy them out of.) She is using her money for something good, and she still gets torn to pieces.
At the heart of this, is just a woman wanting a child and a child needing a home. Thats all plain and simple no hided agender.
