On October 2nd, Pennsylvania man Charles Roberts broke into an Amish schoolhouse and killed 5 schoolgirls before committing suicide. Since then, the Amish community have shown nothing short of an astounding amount of grace and mercy to the killer's family.
The Amish have said they forgive him and have helped set up a fund for the Roberts family at a local bank.
The mother and grandmother of Marian Fisher, one of the young victims, welcomed Mrs Roberts' aunt into their home the day after the shootings, the local Lancaster newspaper reported on its website.
In a world where violence like this has become commonplace, the compassion that the Amish people, especially the family of the murdered girls, is what is unique and wonderful. The widow has expressed her gratitude to the community for their kindness and understanding.
"Your love for our family has helped to provide the healing we so desperately need," Marie Roberts wrote in a letter addressed to Amish friends, neighbours and the local community.
"Please know that our hearts have been broken by all that has happened. We are filled with sorrow for all of our Amish neighbours whom we have loved and continue to love," Mrs Roberts says in her letter.
"We know there are many hard days ahead for all the families who lost loved ones, and so we will continue to put our hope and trust in the God of all comfort, as we all seek to rebuild our lives," she wrote.
Yeah...that's some good stuff right there. Say what you want about them being "different"...but damn if they aren't a good example of showing compassion towards your fellow man.
There was an editorial in the local paper about this a few days ago. It was beautiful. I know I could never muster up forgiveness like that. It's really quite inspiring.
It's really great to see religious fundamentalists who are not assholes. More people need to folloe their example (except for maybe the whole no electricity thing.)
