The first stills surfaced from Angelina Jolie’s upcoming role as Mariane Pearl in the film adaptation of Pearl’s book, A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl. The film followed Mrs. Pearl’s struggle after Islamic extremist executed her husband, Daniel, a Wall Street Journal reporter working in Pakistan.

Although Jolie received Pearl’s blessing for the part, the actress faced harsh words from critics. Jolie’s curly-haired wig and dark body paint captured Pearl’s Afro-Cuban heritage, but it also pissed off quite a few people.

Since the news came out a few weeks ago, message boards across the Internet have been on fire, expressing harsh criticism about Jolie playing the role of Pearl. On BET.com's own boards, user chantejoy calls the very idea a "new generation of Hollywood in blackface."

Critics said it would have been more logical to cast one of the many talented bi-racial Hollywood actresses for the role.

“With talent such as Halle Berry, Thandie Newton and Jennifer Beals available — just to mention a few — what is Hollywood's excuse for casting a white woman this time?” she asks. “Anyone who has seen a photo of Mariane Pearl can tell she is a woman of color.”

There may be more logical choices than Jolie, but are any of those choices more profitable? Probably not.

so it's okay for actresses to put on make-up to help them fit a part (like skinny actresses to putting on fat suits to play fat people), but as soon as a white woman puts on make-up to play a woman of afro-cuban descent (with the woman's blessing) it's a big deal? give me a break.

Ha ha! Halle Berry?! Angelina could've done without the makeup and still given a better performance as Mariane Pearl than Halle Berry ever would.

Maybe if Pearl was an idealistic high school teacher who earned acclaim for daring her misfit students to race the sun...

Wonder if Pearl had any say in the casting.

Oh I dunno, there are more than a few facial similarities between them. I would argue that picking Halle Berry to play her just because she's black is more racist than picking Jolie because she looks right and acts right. It's far from a simple issue though.

ACTing.

MOVIE.

Get the fuck over it, people.

Making this into a racial / "blackface" issue is just pathetic. The ultimate sign of racism being eliminated will be when something like this happens, and no one cares.

Halle Berry is a joke, Angelina looks very similiar to Pearl and can most likely capture the role perfectly.
Besides, they have to make a big deal of it because everyone in hollywood(and those in desperate need of the same attention) has to complain about something, because as we all know...they have it soo tough.

Oh no, anonymous people on the internets are outraged!

Funny nobody seems upset that the guy playing Danny Pearl, himself half Iraqi, is a pasty white, blue eyed Ashkenazi Jew.

although i despise her personally, i think she's a much better actress than the three mentioned. i know it's politically incorrect to say so, but the auditions (if she had to) don't lie. what ever happened to the best person for the job? it's ACTING.

Do you mean Minnie Pearl of Hee Haw fame? Or am I just ignorant to anyone named Minnie Peal?

This is not a racism issue... it's worse.

It's a reverse racism issue.

Isn't reverse racism still racism? And doesn't the phrase "reverse-racism" itself imply something racist, that white people moreso than any other group demonstrate racism (an implication negated by the phrase, as so-called reverse racism proves that non-white people can be racists as well)?

Not to mention the fact that somehow the guy thinks that reverse racism is worse than racism...whatever that means.

i think she looks damn good. She is playing a role, and who says that the other actresses didn't try out for it and Angelina nailed it on the head.
I wouldn't mind seeing Jennifer Beals though.
Who cares what color the person is though???
Its a role, telling a story of a tragedy and if the woman who it is about isn't offended why the hell is the rest of the world.

Reminds me of hearing about Rosie O'Donnell staring in the latest broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof. A short skim of the cast list reveals a Murphy, Shoop, Paoluccio, Walla (I don't know what this one is, but I don't think its jewish), Delmonte and Stewart. I mean come on. They couldn't find any Jewish actors in New York???

If they were casting a ditzy idiot in the role just to make money, that would be a problem. But Angelina Jolie really is a brilliant actor, as she proved to all of us in Girl, Interrupted.

If Mrs. Pearl gave Jolie her blessing, then there's no reason to second-guess the casting decision. Perhaps Mrs. Pearl saw something in Jolie that transcended skin color - like her involvement in the international charitable community. Maybe she thought that Jolie had the right stuff to play her, over and above talented biracial actors like Jennifer Beals.

As for Angie, she looks like she went and got a tan. It doesn't even look like body paint.
