More wishful thinking than a real rumor, "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart has nonetheless squelched hopes of a Stewart/Colbert ticket in the ’08 presidential race.

Stewart says the T-shirts promoting him and Stephen Colbert "are a real sign of how sad people are" with the state of affairs in the country.

"Nothing says 'I am ashamed of you my government' more than 'Stewart/Colbert '08,' " Stewart told an audience Sunday at the New Yorker Festival in New York City.

Stewart also has harsh words for political spin-meisters on both sides of the aisle.

"They are all corrupted. They all know each other. They all laugh about it backstage. It's horrifying.

"I feel bad for Ann Coulter," he said dryly. "After you've denigrated the widows of men who lost their lives on 9/11, I just don't know what your followup book is. Unless it's to dig up Mother Teresa and stuff a d— into her eye."

I'd like to see the debates returned to the DAR instead of being some cozy, back room deal cooked up to keep the Dems and Pubs the only game in town.

I would vote for Stewart/Colbert so hard my ballot would catch on fire.

That, of course, could be problematic.

Psh!

Maybe we're totally satisfied with our government, and a Stewart/Colbert ticket just gets our panties really wet!

Ever thought of that, Jon?

It's a shame, but hey-- my vote's taken anyway. I'm still holding out for Christopher Walken '08! Because the Whitehouse NEEDS more cowbell.

But isn't it that Robin Williams guy?

I still think it'd be rad...

Me and my friend already discussed if Stewart ran for president. We figured that it would just fuck the democrats over in the long run by taking away votes.

Jon Stewart likes to say he's just comedy, but the rest of America knows different. I watch his show just as much as CNN MSNBC or Fox. The weird thing is, I trust his news more then anyone elses. He's the only one on that has heart.
He's had my vote since I watched his first show back from September 11th, 2001.

I think he's a really, really good man. And that it's really sad that a good man is our comedy and bad men are our news and government. (Good link, thank you.)

God bless Mr. Stewart.

I think it's good he's staying where he is - a good, healthy dose of political cynicism to remind us those in charge can be complete (INSERT EXPLETIVE OF CHOICE HERE)

You guys have Jon Stewart, we have Have I Got News For You. It's the closest thing anyway.

His name was Jimmy Carter. Unfortunately because no one else in government thought that they should be serving the people instead of themselves, they kept him from being a very effective president. frown

What I loved about that Jon Stewart clip, and still do, is that he was the only TV personality that I felt was genuine in their "back after 9/11 speech". He wasn't spewing some overdone stiff-upper-lip bullshit, he was talking from his heart.
The sad part is, when he was talking about why acts of terrorism can't destroy democracy, and we survive because of our free society. And now, five years later, we've just handed it over to Bush. frown

Exactly...I am sick to fucking death of the argument that "if we don't fight them over there...we'll be fighting them over here".

Our government is so full of hubris that they can't possibly fathom that OUR foreign policy makes us a target. Islamic fundamentalists did not magically appear on September 10th, 2001.

They don't hate our freedom...they hate our foreign policy.

OMG you're so right. They hate our foreign policy. That's why they only attack the US and never attack anybody else.

You're so ignorant it hurts. Our foreign policy has DICK to do with terrorists attacking us. You believe in the "give them flowers and candy and they'll like us" school of that. Well mr. optimist, Clintoon tried that, and look what it got us? Are you really that thick to think that if we leave them alone they'll leave us alone?

The only way to get them to leave us alone is to make them understand that the price for their behavior is too high. That when they kill 3000 of our people, we annihillate entire countries that support them. When they hijack planes we respond by toppleing governments that shelter them. When they kill 20 in a suicide bombing we kill hundreds in aerial bombing.

Give it time. They'll figure it out. And in the mean time, we'll be here, straped to the teeth, ready to give them hell.
