ummm, I think Kirsten got the issue right, its another case of a big name star who has probably been miscast (and yet another american accent in a role where it would be preferable not to have one).
Look I love Sophia (and think she's an interesting director, so I'll see it), but if it was her decision I do wonder at the casting.
If they were looking for someone who was french, siimilar age and had that same glamour and some name maybe Ludivine Sagnier, but I suppose it was a studio decision to have a big name star playing her.
French "critics" have absolutely horrible tastes in cinema.
When I heard that the film was booed at Cannes, I immediately deciced that I had to see it. And I did. And it's a great movie. Sofia Coppola is an amazing director and this film proves once again that even "bad" actors can act well if they're being properly directed.
I don't see why French people should be upset about this movie. It doesn't martyrize Marie-Antoinette and the American actors speaking with an American accent didn't bother me at all. It would've bothered me quite a bit if they had British accents and even more if they had been speaking English with a French accent.
