Sofia Coppola’s latest film, Marie-Antoinette, should draw a more appreciative audience in America than it had at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The film garnered wide-spread boos from French critics. While disappointed in the reaction of the French, the star of the film, Kirsten Dunst, understood why they disliked her.

"I didn't take it to heart," Dunst says in an interview in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. "How would we feel about the French doing a movie about George Washington with French actors?"

The actress admitted filming took a toll on her.

"Sometimes I felt really isolated because it was such a lonely part to play," she says. "I didn't really interact with that many people … I couldn't really rely on other people to get it out of me. I was really thankful when Jason (Schwartzman, who plays Louis XVI) was on set, because then I could unload a little bit on him."

Maybe they were upset that the plot was more like "What if Paris Hilton was Marie Antoinette". Just watching the Regal First Look special on it gave me the hives.

Martyrizing one of the worst leaders in world history, who grew fat while her people starved? Oh, but it has rock music in it! Get out.

I think the whole point of the movie is to show what a bad queen she was in terms of a ruler of the people. and how much of a celeb she was ala Paris Hilton even way back then. at least that's how it seems to be portrayed from the previews.

Yes, god forbid a director has creative freedom and deviates from facts for the sake of ENTERTAINMENT.

Well, that would depend on whether or not you find watching people behave like that entertaining or not.

nice to see she is up there with the historical knowledge and that.. couldn't imagine why the French might do a movie about George Washington... they only aided him in a major way.

and I've seen her act.. i'm sure it's not the reason why there was boo's

it most likely started with Boobs show us your boobs.. and when they realized it wasn't going to happen and she was being serious in her acting it turned to boos. just my thought

Marie offended the noblity when she cut back the royal staff.
blaming her for her death is like blaming a six year old for global warming.

I really wanted to see the movie. Then I saw Kirsten Dunst was in it and now I might not go see it. She is like nails on a chalk board to me. *sigh* What to do..what to do.. surreal

i can't decide if i want to see this or not. i'm not opposed to humanizing marie antoinette ... but i *am* worried what the movie says (even inadvertantly) about the french revolution - which was like only (arguably) the most important moment in human history.
