It was truly an honor to get to talk with Chi Cheng of the Deftones. I have been a fan of theirs for many years. The Deftones may be hanging out with the kids on the Family Values Tour but that hasnt made them any less awesome.
This album needs to come out now it has been way to long since the last Deftones album......B-Sides and Rarities was a good filler album to keep us waiting but enough already.......I know there is only a few more weeks to wait but shit it's not like they are Tool or something.
Great interview! I've loved these guys since the day Adrenaline came out. I did really like that last album and I'm sure the new album is gonna be great as well!
I love that this band is just like EVERY other band in the writing/recording process.
Then again, I don't think that there is anything that I DONT like about them.
I hope that when Chi says the band wants to play their best shows ever he means that they wont be drunk as fuck, and that they'll actually have their audio mixed properly for once.
i'm very, very stoked about this album. i have yet to hear a Deftones album i don't like, and the older they get the more complex Chino and Stef become.
but yeah, it does kind of sound like Chi sobered up and got his shit together but another member or two of the band didn't.
egh, i like the deftones and i realize they have lives (and some of them have families), but it sucks to read about the recording process of huge bands only to find that they just do their part in the studio and leave... however, if they did the entire writing process together, that changes things.
p.s. yeah, i know... how dare i say anything negative about the deftones....
That was great! I'm roughly the same age and have had the same kind of experiences (in terms of stage of life) and of course being in a band is a fantastic way to make a living, but it's still a job and one in which you are forced to deal with people on creative (often problem soving) level, which is tough. I really appreciate his sense of humor! I love the quote about "...apparently you go to the bar and drink" that's hilarious, anyone whose been married the general disatisfaction your spouse expresses about whatever you do. Chi was really striaght forward, which is refreshing, we wasn't playing up to the interviewer, he was just saying what he thought.
you don't have the self titled? holy shit. get out of the house right now
man, it's good to hear them speak some truth. i don't think they could do a thing to make me hate them. that said, Chi's comments about the band blowing up big do sound a bit suss.
please don't try to be massive massive guys, that's the seperation i love
The first four songs are definately Deftones, the rest I think are scabs slapped on the album to make me think it's all Deftones... But it ain't Chino Morino doesn't have a vagina, last time I checked.
But the songs that AREE Deftones fucking slay. If you liked the Self Titled, fuckin' check it out. It's not as complex as saaay... Minerva. It's definately back to the days of Adrenaline and Around the Fur when it comes to balls-out-osity, and heaviness... But it's melodic like Self-Titled.
I've been a fan of the deftones pretty much since there were deftones albums you can buy, and they are my number one favorite band. I do have every release, including every single, import and exclusive vinyl release that was available to the public. I'm sure there's probably some other stuff that wasn't available but i don't have a line on that stuff.
I feel a little disappointed with the interview. While Chi says the band is closer than ever, I don't see how recording "your parts" in 3 days, and then sitting around for a year just to wait to hear the final product is having a band be close, at least working close. Maybe they all met at denny's after or something. Maybe they spent a lot of off time together. But I don't know if musically that would make a good combination. Then again, sounds like Chi might be the one sort of left out. While he was recording spoken word, and had that released, everyone else in the band did something on Team Sleep.
Saturday Night Wrist: Am I going to download it? I don't know, that always loses the magic for me. When a new album comes out, I always just want to buy it, put it in my discman, or on my stereo and sit there and listen to it fully together, as it was produced and finalized, and then make my judgement about it. How is it going to compare? I feel that the Deftones aren't stoic, but that each album builds on the previous one. If you listen to self titled, you will hear elements from every previous album all the way back to adrenaline. I figure we'll probably hear this too, on Saturday Night Wrist, but with that team sleep influence thrown in there.
As for the deftones blowing up, I don't think they have to try. It's been happening since white pony, and it's going to happen naturally. This band is still the 'biggest underground band' and I sort of like them that way. But all it takes is a few good promotions from maverick to put them on a bill with someone who sells out arenas on their own, and they've got it. It's not like they DON'T have the fan base. I sometimes can't believe they're still playing festivals. But I guess some bands, like them, and Korn, are just stuck to that, maybe they don't want to stop...
In my eyes, however, they can do no wrong. I haven't heard anything yet where I just went, "you know what, I've loved the deftones for years, but I think I've outgrown them. They just aren't what I used to like from them." Sure my favorite album I think is always going to be a tie between Around the Fur and White Pony, and maybe I will always consider that to be the glory years of the Deftones.
I see them definitely being that ozzy type one day. They're not old yet. But I can see them just being around forever, sort of like Korn, without overstaying their welcome. I think the fact is because each album builds on the last, rather than departs from the last. Take AFI for example. If you gave someone adrenaline, and saturday night wrist, they're going to know it's the same band. Give someone "answer that and stay fashionable, and "very proud of ya" or fuck, even black sails, and then give them december underground, and they'll be going, so who are these two bands?
I'd just like to add one last thing in response to trocc - that meteor strike, i think you're looking for, i think that's how i feel about the deftones, but i don't think you'll find it. I definitely think this album will probably be better than the last. But I still think for old fans, there definitely are those glory days that you just can't get back to.
