I was put out and had all my wisdom teeth out at the same time.

I remember them having me count down from ten, then I was in the waiting room having my mom help me to her car.

In just a day or so I was up and feeling fine. It was hard not to smoke or suck on anything though.

Pretty easy experience.

i had them all out at the same time. just be reaaaally careful to follow all your detinst's instructions so you dont get an infection or dry socket. also, get knocked out if you can; they didnt do it for me, and even with nitrous it was terrifying. but all in all, not TOO terrible.

I had them out between a two weeks and a month ago. My story is not pleasant.
A month ago, I went to have the first two wisdom teeth out, both the ones on the right side. Had a local anaesthetic, the extraction of the top was very easy, fairly painless, I was happy. The bottom one... the roots of the bottom tooth hooked under the jaw. It took him forty five minutes to extract the tooth; he had to break the tooth in two, remove the top part, drill through the jawbone and then remove the bottom part. It was one of the most painful experiences in my life. It took only a week and a half to start healing nicely though, and there was no real trouble after that.

On the other side (about two weeks ago now) similar story, the top tooth came out easy. He was preparing for a very lengthy extraction of the bottom tooth, but it turns out the tooth was infected and so the gum did not hold onto it as tightly - so the extraction, whilst not fun or easy, was much less painful than for the right side.
But.
The socket got infected thereafter and was horrendously painful. The entire left side of my mouth was swollen and I was unable to eat even soup - drinking water a chore. The first round of antibiotics was only somewhat effective - it still left some resistant bacteria, the infection had a resurgance resulting in more pain. I've been on a second course of a different antibiotic which I just finished today which worked though - I was able to eat solid food this last Monday for the first time, and I've been recovering since.
Some of the most painful moments I can think of, though it's mostly due to my shitty genes and an unfortunate case of erithromycin-resistant bacteria.

I'd still have them taken out - as it was they were causing me a lot of pain to begin with, and my mouth feels a lot better now. It's just that the month whilst they were extracted was highly highly unpleasant.

Oh, and sorry for the really long story. Don't mean to scare you off, it's just that I had some unfortunate complications.

Mine were impacted and hurt like a son of a bitch. I had to wait until I had health insurance to get them out. The actual removal went fine. The healing time was longer than I would have liked but the alternative is too grim to contemplate.

Don't wait. Have them removed when the pain first starts or you'll regret it. Unless you're one of those lucky people who get to keep theirs. Then die in the fase. tongue wink

As my wisdom teeth grew in, each caused massive whole-head migraine-like headaches, so I was happy to have them out (three separate events, a few months apart)... even though:

Wisdom tooth Nos. 1 and 2 each were growing sideways, under the gum, through the roots of the neighboring teeth. I had them removed individually as they I began to have headaches. My dentist, located in a mall, couldn't knock me out, so I was simply given local and told to hold on for dear life. Each time, they had to slice open the gum, drill the tooth into smaller subsections, and pull the sections out individually. On one tooth, the chunk snapped off leaving a difficult-to-retrieve root, and they had to dig for it. Most disturbing thing: the cracking, crunching noises as two assistants held my head down as the dentist stood up on the armrests of the dentist chair, leaning back to put his weight into the recalcitrant chunks o' tooth. The most painful thing: one assistant used my nose as a handle, and it wasn't anesthetized; as I squirmed under the pain of having my nose bent flush against my face, I was chided for "making noises that were scaring children in the next room."

Wisdom tooth #3 grew in fine, and I was able to keep it. That is, until wisdom tooth #4 grew in, and wouldn't stop growing-- an "extruded tooth," they called it. It impacted #3 back under the gum, which grew over #3 along with some bacteria; the impaction also knocked #4 awry, and it began growing outward into my cheek. I got both removed at the same time; they ddn't figure out I had an infection with #3 until they injected some novocaine and the gum popped, shooting blood and pus all over. Normally they don't extract until the infection's cleared, but they decided it was necessary, and chopped both out-- the chopping in #3 was so severe that they had to stitch the gum back together with metal wire; I proudly showed that off for months as an "extreme" oral pierce. #4 was normal, but I fucked up by smoking, got dry socket, and was in agony for a few weeks as it felt like the jawbone was exposed directly to cold air.

Sound gruesome? Perhaps... but know this: the headaches I had while the wisdom teeth grew were so severe that the above horror story was far preferable to continuing with the pain. The healing was temporary, I had some groovy gum-piercings to show off, and no more headaches.

it ruined my week after christmas, but it had to be done. and it wasn't that bad smile

I just wanted to add that "dry socket" is one of the most horrifying medical terms I've ever heard. "Testicular cancer" and "anal leakage" are erotic by comparison. Something about "dry socket" just makes me feel ill.

Jesus! Now i never want to have mine taken out. They fit fine back there, but when i look in the mirror, they appear to be enot so healthy. I really should go to the dentist as i'm covered out here, but anesthetic doesn't work too well on my teeth.

Naw, I always get the death-camp techs and dentists who yell at me for blinking wrong.

I get the beautiful techs when I go for cleanings, because nothing turns them on more than having to stick their hands in my mouth to chip calcified plaque off of my teeth.

yep I had two taken out at the same time as having a root canal done..numbed my mouth, tugged on them a bit and they popped right out, no pain whatsoever and the noise they make when they come out is fucking awesome..the root canal however was horrific, hence last week was my first visit back to th dentist in 6 years. eeek

Got all 4 out a few years back. Not too bad, even though two had really long roots and the dental student doing the extraction used a pair of huge, truly medieval-looking pliers to get them out. She was a petite Indian girl and had to kneel on the arms of the swivel chair I was reclined in to get enough leverage. After 45 minutes of working on me she had worked up quite a sweat, and people walking by the open door in the hallway did double-takes while this was going on since her back was to them and she was...um... obviously exerting herself.

I felt like offering her a cigarette afterwards. biggrin

While the experience itself wasn't pleasant it really wasn't too bad either and everything healed up nicely with minimal pain or drama.

N.B. - if you smoke, do your best to quit beforehand as the action of sucking on a ciggie as well as the smoke itself will seriously impede healing and increase the likelihood of dry socket, bleeding and infection.

Also, if you are prone to serious dental pain and need real meds like percoset or vicodin you may well have to be extremely vocal and insistent about this since the DEA witch hunt for overprescribed controlled painkillers has led a lot of dentists to only give out OTC crap like Tylenol.

I had all 4 out at once and they were large enough that they had to saw them in half before removing them. There was some problem with the pharmacist and it took a couple of hours to get my pain killers so when they finally got there I took an extra and a handful of advil. I woke up 28 hours later with no pain at all.

They also had to give me lots of extra stuff during the procudure, not because it hurt or anything, but because the stuff they gave me had no effect. The pill that was supposed to knock me out did nothing, so I was on two different oral painkillers, shots, and nitrous. It doesn't hurt, but the sound and burning smell from the drills and saws can be sorta distracting.
