Doctors diagnosed rock legend Marianne Faithfull with breast cancer this week. Luckily for Faithfull, they diagnosed the disease in its earliest stages; consequently, she is expected to make a full recovery with treatment.

Her spokesman Rob Partridge said: "The disease has been quickly discovered by doctors in France _ where Marianne stays when not at home in Ireland _ and the prognosis for a return to full health is excellent.

Marianne Faithfull is looking forward to playing the re-scheduled tour in 2007."

Faithfull kept an upbeat attitude toward the diagnosis, and she predicted a successful recovery.

The singer with the distinctive gravelly voice said in a statement: "I have absolute faith and confidence in my fantastic medical team and of course I will be well again, if not better than ever.

"Next year's tour, I want to assure fans, will be one big celebration," she added.

Faithfull gained fame in the 1960's after members of the Rolling Stones discovered her at a party. The press sensationalized her relationship with Stones singer Mick Jagger, garnering magazine covers because of her romantic rows rather than her music. Her phenomenal 1979 album, Broken English, allowed the press to finally focus on her music.

One of the most compelling things I've ever seen on TV was her performance on Saturday Night Live in 1979, performing "Broken English." Her voice completely and totally broke early on into the song, but she made it through, basically croaking and squeaking the rest of the song out. It's amazing, and a display of pure toughness and determination.

At least she didn't do a stupid little polka dance and run off the stage crying like some others I could mention.
