Entertainment Weekly recently compiled a list of the top 50 high school movies of all time. In what EW called a list of “beloved flicks about the traumatic teen years,” The Breakfast Club unexpectedly toppled fan favorite Fast Times at Ridgemont High for the top spot.

We see it as we want to see it — in the simplest terms, the most convenient definition: The Breakfast Club is the best high school movie of all time. It may lack the scope of its peers — the drinking, the driving, the listless loitering in parking lots — as well as any scenes that actually take place during school. But if hell is other people — and high school is hell — then John Hughes is the genre's Sartre, and this is his No Exit.

Breakfast Club star Molly Ringwald managed to make the top 50 list an astounding three times.

49. Sixteen Candles 1984
48. Just One of the Guys 1985

I question this list. Ok...I knew Breakfast club would be number 1 but HP and the Goblet of Fire???

Ferris bueller should've ranked higher.

Almost all of Say Anything takes place after high school. So does most of Last Picture Show (but I could be wrong about that one)...and a lot of American Graffiti.

I say, if there are no high school scenes, then it's not a high school movie.

*Goes to actually read article to see if I said something stupid*

It's harder to enjoy Ferris Bueller now that I know the guy who played the principal is a convicted sex offender. It reframes the entire film as a deranged authority figure's dirty quest for hot boy tail.

This list has more holes than Swiss cheese. While Back to the Future, The Karate Kid and Risky Business are good movies, are they really "High School Movies" in the sense? I doubt it.

Bring It On over Stand and Deliver? Mean Girls over Dead Poets Society?

And HARRY FRIGGIN' POTTER? I like the series as much as the next nerd, but jeez, even the cinematic and critical masterpiece that is Varsity Blues deserves a spot in that list over him.

And here's why:

After a really good Fall Movie Preview issue (especially w/the Casino Royale article), EW's dropped the ball on this one. But, I'm sure EW's readers will probably point this out en masse.

Pretty in Pink didn't crack the top ten?! What? Also, Boyz isn't even a high school movie.

I agree. But it doesn't belong anywhere near the top 10. To be fair, there are a lot of really great high school movies. So it's tough.
