Every person I know with a literature degree works as a social worker...Unfortunately for them and their student loans.

I can't imagine how you make that transition. How do they get the right kind of job experience for social work with an English degree? Fuck, I don't understand how to get a decent job! *drinks*

I think most states are pretty desperate for social workers, so if you've just got a tech degree in welding, they'd probably be cool with it.

Well, I suppose you'll have the most grammatically correct "Will work for food" sign out on the street and will be able to charge your fellow homeless people, helping to spice up their signs with clever Les Miserables references and self-deprecating uses of irony. wink

Seriously though, most of the people I know, including myself, who graduated with liberal arts degrees are doing nothing in our careers related to our majors. So with that said, you can be like my friend who worked at Virgin records and now runs his own music studio, or my cousin who is an interior designer to the stars -- both of whom received their degrees in English/Writing/Lit.

In other words, you can probably do whatever you want as long as you get some real-world experience in the field and work toward that goal (with the exception of jobs directly involved in the application of sciences, medicine, law, etc. of course which are more specialized and usually require degrees/certifications of some sort)

Good luck.

do some kind of volunteering an evening or two a week for a bit and you can get an entry level social work job... that's what i did after my liberal arts degree (in women's studies) until i went back to school for another 3 yrs to get a social work job that would actually keep me above the poverty line.

Bah, don't listen to folks who say there are no lucrative writing careers. Hone your skills for deceit and the world is your oyster.

Also market research, public relations, advertising. It's a well rounded major that can lead to any number of things.

No way. That is far too Lovecraftian of an occupation. A person who spends all that time and money in college should be able to live a life free of the fear of being strangled by a book-dwelling tentacled horror from beyond the stars.
