This week kicks off international hippie destination Burning Man Festival, a living installation in the Black Rock Desert created and destroyed over the course of the week by anyone who shows up. That's my rough definition of the fest. According to the uppity website, when asked, "What Is Burning Man?" the formal reply is "Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind."

Read more about the "Principles" of the Burning Man art project, or for something less Kumbaya, check out the archives of past installations at Burning Man.

Burning Man takes place in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada this August 28th through September 4th. Check out SG's Burning Man group, browse the website or participate here.

-1 for pigeonholing it as a hippie event. There's plenty of people who have no great affinity for "jam bands" who attend Burning Man. I'd have gone with something more vague like "artsy weirdos."

-10 for not linking to SG's Burning Man group.

you're right, i guess they can't.
but i read it more as: "blind people can't understand color, even when described to them! stupid blind people!"

I have blind friends who can see colors. Blindness is in varying stages, and many blind people still have somewhat functioning eyesight.

Being blind does not mean that one sees only darkness.

I'm not trying to be the PC police or anything. And honestly, I don't really give a damn about Burning Man, excepting that I get really tired of seeing photo exhibits about it.

Fuck Burning Man. Art is good and everything, but I live in Reno. I work at Costco. I had to help about 200 smelly, dirty, high, etc. people today find bottled water, power generators, dehydrated food, blankets, tarps, tents, batteries, etc. It sucked.

At least I didn't work at the REI across the street. Face!
