In a $2 million lawsuit, legendary comedian Jackie Mason claimed an unlikely adversary used his likeness: Jews for Jesus. Mason charged the religious group--who insist they are Jews, but recognize Jesus Christ as the Messiah--with using his name in a promotional pamphlet without his permission, thus hurting his hard-earned reputation. Mason demanded the pamphlets--which Jews for Jesus members distributed around NYC--be destroyed immediately.

The pamphlets feature an image of Mason next to the words "Jackie Mason ... A Jew for Jesus!?" with information inside that outlines the similarities between Jews and Christians.

"The pamphlet uses my name, my likeness, my `shtick' (if you will), and my very act, which is derived from my personality, to attract attention and converts," Mason said in an affidavit.

A rep for the group claimed the pamphlets are "good-natured," and argued Mason should drop the lawsuit bullshit.

"Shame on him for getting so upset about this," she said Friday.

Mason said no way--the lawsuit will go forward.

"While I have the utmost respect for people who practice the Christian faith, the fact is, as everyone knows, I am as Jewish as a matzo ball or kosher salami," the 75-year-old comedian said in documents filed in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

I liked Jackie Mason a lot more when he was just an unfunny comedian...instead of some self-appointed voice of conservative reason.

He's defending his likeness and character being used for something he doesn't believe in. How is that being a "self-appointed voice of conservative reason"?

How would you feel about "Cash for Arsonists" pamphlets being handed out?

Defending his likeness & character doesn't make him a self-appointed voice of conservative reason. The way he acts in his public media apperances does. He's nothing but a more polished version of Larry the Cable Guy.

I didn't argue anything. I expressed an opinion...you questioned it...and I clarified.

That's an interesting throught process you have going on in your head. I'd expect as much, though, from somebody who just used the "How would you like it if a big ant came and squashed YOU" line of reasoning.

Jackie's reputation is worth 2 million dollars? Who knew?
I'm as Jewish as kreplach. My reputation must be worth twice that. If only the Jews for Jesus would defame me.

Yeah, but I usually have a point, And if I'm shot down and proved wrong, I don't tread water and throw out "big ant" theories.

I just say, "Hey, I was wrong."

Some people don't seem capable of that and always need to have the last (laughable) word.

Saying I don't have a point...because you either don't agree with or understand my point is juvenile.

You didn't shoot me down or prove me wrong in this thread...and you DID use a tired piece of playground logic.

I have admitted when I was wrong, ungrdgingly, when I have been proven wrong either to my own satisfaction...or beyond a shadow of a doubt. Your assumption that I don't...or your complete denial of the fact that I have done this is laughable and shows that you're just interested in trading shots...not participating in a conversation.

You can't simultaneously play in the mud and profess to take the high road.

I've gotta go with Jackie on this one, Jews for Jesus are a bunch I'd sue if they tried to say I had anything to do with them.

I've gotta wonder why Jews for Jesus would have used Jackie Mason, considering the number of more contemporary celebrities that would make more of an "impact" among those under... oh... 75. I'd join Jews for Jesus if Sarah Silverman told me to, even though I'm already Christian and not Jewish.

Anyway-- good for Mr. Mason, I hope he prevails; considering his act (and appeal) is based on his take on his Jewish heritage and beliefs, an outside group claiming his beliefs are of another faith could conceivably cause damage to his reputation among his fanbase. And fuck the spokesperson who said "shame on him" for reacting badly to the pamphlet-- they piss on his beliefs and expect him to chuckle about it?
