In an completely inexplicable move, producers offered lip-syncing marvel Ashlee Simpson the role of Roxie Hart in the Broadway and London casts of perennial stage favorite, Chicago. While Simpson has no theater experience, she did have a couple of guest appearances on the sappy family television program, “7th Heaven,” and a memorable performance on Saturday Night Live. A Simpson source claimed Ashlee will take the role.

“She will probably choose London,” says the source, who adds that she would start in October.

A Chicago rep refused to confirm if Simpson accepted the offer, but this could be a career-making role for the pop singer--Renee Zellweger received an Oscar nomination for the role in the 2002 film adaptation.

It's hard to do theater and sing when one can't act or hold a note. The truth will be revealed...or I will put a trade embargo on the city of London.

I can't understand this AT ALL! This girl does not have a musical quality voice. Either venue will rip her to shreds. Just proves that theaters will often lower thier standers in order to bring in a big name to rake in the ticket sales. (I say this having paid $90 to listen to Glenn Close sreech in Sunset Blvd. on Broadway) puke Please people come to your senses!

Its more difficult for Ashlee Simpson to sound "good" in a musical since they don't have tone modulators tongue

The characters on 7th Heaven have far greater depth than any of the roles in Chicago. I think she'll do fine.

While the point is well made... I fucking HATED Michael Keaton as Batman.

But hey, who knows. Hopefully Ashley will figure that this is a huge opportunity for her to step out of her sister's shadow, and maybe she'll bust her ass accordingly. People do, sometimes, rise to the occasion.

live theatre has become just another movie set. people getting roles because of name and not talent.

not that that HASN'T happened for ages and ages and ages..... but it's just getting ridiculous. first disney takes over broadway and now this. ugh.
