Mel Gibson pleaded no contest to charges stemming from his drunk-driving debacle last month. The District Attorney charged Gibson with a misdemeanor, and sentenced the actor to three years’ probation. Gibson’s attorney appeared before the Superior Court judge in place of Gibson.

In exchange for the plea, the DA dropped two of the three counts against Gibson. The actor volunteered to appear in public service announcements denouncing drinking and driving, and he agreed to enter rehab to treat his alcoholism. In addition, the agreement required him to attend AA meetings, pay a small fine, and relinquish his license for three months. Gibson’s attorney, Gina Satriano, said everyone involved is pleased with the outcome.

"This was an appropriate outcome which addresses all the public safety concerns of drinking and driving," Satriano said.

Gibson was arrested July 28th after police officers stopped him for reckless driving on California’s Pacific Coast Highway. While questioned by police, Gibson began his famous anti-Semitic tirade in which he stated, “the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." He later apologized for his "belligerent behavior" and "despicable" remarks.

Ah, gotta love being a celebrity. The things you can do and say and only get a slap on the wrist.

That's it, I'm going to Hollywood, becoming a star, and eating a baby. Then I can, to paraphrase Denis Leary, get on the front cover of People saying "Sorry! I Fucked Up!"

i'd really like to see a public service announcement in which he claims that the jews are actually NOT responsible for all of the wars of the world. that would make my day.

Just hypothetically, would it have caused the same sensation if he had said the Muslims were responsible for all the wars, etc? What about X-tians (pretending he's not one for just a moment)?

My observation is that unfounded hate speech seems to cause a greater stir when directed at the Jewish people. I'm curious if anyone else thinks this is true, and if so, more than a little silly considering the very different world stage we play on today.

No, it pretty much would have been equally despicable.

Believe me, I'm with you on that.

I meant that I've noticed what seems to be a good many people who get extra touchy when someone is hurling stupid Jewish hate remarks. Even more than with hate directed towards other groups. I think this is ridiculous.

the Jews of hollywood barely noticed Gibson's comments, nor did they even really care. Big time honchos even made it a point to state to the media how little they cared about Gibson's remarks. If he had done something like used the N word or insulted women, THEN we would have seen real controversy.
