Joan Jett is the ultimate leather-clad, punk-rock icon. Her early hits were instrumental to the evolution of punk rock, and especially to its crossover into mainstream music. After over 25 years in the business, this bad ass composer is still rocking out with her band, The Blackhearts. I got a chance to talk with Jett about their latest album, Sinner, while she was out on the road with the Warped Tour.
I am recalling an interview a couple of years ago she did with Al Franken on Air America when she was on the USO tour playing for the U.S. troops overseas. The stories she had to share about the tour and the way she spoke about them struck me as a very selfless thing to be doing at the time. Usually I am usually disgusted by "support the troops" kind of crap since it almost always self serviing or part of some other agenda.
I even had a change of heart. Maybe if we care and express our love for the kids we send to other countries to fight and kill we would be a lot less tolerant of the horrors of war they are expected to endure and demand they return home where they can do less harm and less harm can come to them.
Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it...I hate myself for loving you Joan!!
I can't believe I was the first to say that.
I also can't belive what a dork I am. Wait, yes I can.
I fucking love her. She is so great. Seeing her on the Warped Tour was a blast. She really put on a great show. And she looks amazing.
A Runaways reunion would be great, but I read in the newest Rolling Stone that their original drummer, Sandy West, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and a brain tumor.
OH MY GOD!!!!! she was my idol in the early 80's and she still is. THE original hardcore rocker chick.
oh i just love her!!!!!
We've been here too long
Tryin' to get along
Pretendin' that you're oh so shy
I'm a natural ma'am
Doin' all I can
My temperature is runnin' high
Cry at night
No one in sight
An' we got so much to share
Talking's fine
If you got the time
But I ain't got the time to spare
Yeah
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where
There, yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Every girl an' boy
Needs a little joy
All you do is sit an' stare
Beggin' on my knees
Baby, won't you please
Run your fingers through my hair
My, my, my
Whiskey and rye
Don't it make you feel so fine
Right or wrong
Don't it turn you on
Can't you see we're wastin' time, yeah
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Do you wanna touch me there, where
There, yeah
My husband and I recently had the pleasure of meeting Joan Jett while working at Warped Tour this past summer. We have the best by far story of meeting her.
So... we're hanging out backstage.. relaxing and cooling off. When a jax security guard comes over and starts to harass us about not taking pictures in the backstage area. Which, at that time, we weren't, our cameras were just out because we had just finished shooting.. so I could tell that she was just hot and irritated and wanted to flex muscle.
So while shes bitching, I happened to look up and notice the lovely Joan Jett walking towards us with her tour manager. Right then and there, Matthew and I blow off the still bitching security guard and walk up to Joan. We asked if we could get a picture with her, and she was so stoked to do it. I could tell she was just happy that we knew who she was.
So her and Matthew pose for a shot, and the stupid security guard steps right in the way of the shot. She starts again on how we cant take pictures without an escort or something or other..
When...*BAM!!!!* Joan's tour manager practically trucks the security guard, nearly knocking her on her ass.. saying, "Just back off and let them do what they want to do! They aren't hurting anyone, they're allowed to be back here, so go away!"
FUCK YES! Any chance I have at laughing at a dumbass security guard I'll take! haha!
What's even better is, I caught some of it in the picture!!! Hell yeah!
Here you can see Joan's manager shoving the bitch out of the way. How priceless..
And here is the picture I took right after with smiling faces. hehe..
What's even better than that is, the next show we worked was the Orlando show, right after.. and she saw us standing backstage and came over to us, laughing about her manager shoving the shit out of a security guard. So I got my picture with her.
Hell yes. Happy birthday to me, another Joan Jett interview. I love her. But why couldn't we get any pics of her in that bikini she was talking about...
I met her somewhat creepy ex-manager (from the Runaways days) Kim Fowley at a music festival in Vegas. He had this suit on that reminded me of the Partridge Family bus paint job. Though that was later topped when I met Dolemite later that night.
Fun stuff is when Fowley and Jonathan Richman get into it in liner notes. Those two guys are quirky enough that they almost belonged together.
