Neil Marshall has created a very scary movie with The Descent. It is a classic story of a group of people going someplace they shouldnt and encountering monsters. This time it is a group of women who go spelunking and confront cave dwelling monsters. Marshall first made a name for himself in the horror genre with his hybrid Rio Bravo meets werewolves movie Dog Soldiers.
i watched descent expecting a amusing movie like dog soldiers and was unexpectedly impressed and spooked.
great film (didn't entirely catch the ending though, should rewatch it sometime)

This is killing me: what is film commentary where someone was referring to Iggy Pop being the inspiration for a monster in it?
Can't wait to see this movie, looks great.

I love this movie. What really impressed me was that even if it never had any monsters it'd still would have been good.
I am so friggin mad with what they are doing to this film....
I got the DVD of THE DESCENT about a year ago, in its original, wonderful gory glory....And Now? They are pulling a haute /High tension with this one....again, as everyone knows, N.American audiences cannot handle subtitles, B&W films, or most that are foreign and not 'American' enough, hence the reason we got The Ring from RINGU, The Grudge from JU-ON, etc...Funny that the remake remark was thrown in, as you pretty well hit that head on with that, Nice one Mr.Epstein...
See this film before you see the cut and edited version in the crappy gogoplexes for 20 bucks a shot...Go DL it, before it is not there to get, as we all know that when they offer another version of the DVD from this new cut? You can be DAMNED sure they WILL exploit it, as always.
Good Interview tho...and as I said, See the original...For the sake of the conservation of Original Horror...

What I find odd is that I had just finished a novel by Jeff Long titled "The Descent." It also has to do with cannibalistic humaniod underground dwellers. Oh wait! That's a different movie!
Anyway, the novel is different enough but the similarities really struck me along with the timing. I just finish this book and the movie is released? Weird!
Oh yeah, the first half of the book was pretty spooky but then it slowed down and lost the pace. Still a good read.
I'd like to know what Neil Marshall would say about it? Now know this! I'm not in ANY WAY saying Neil copied the book! No way! I'm just talking about the similarities I felt it had. I LIKE Neil's films and want to see many more!
Whew! Now that that's clear.
What is this original version that you are talking about Gory? I'd like to know more.
I'm pretty excited to see this, but I'm sort of pissed they showed the monsters in the trailer because that slow-burn horror REALLY gets me, and I'm sure I would've been freaked the hell out if I'd seen them for the first time when I was all wound up.

i can imagine, the movie really works up slowly to that moment while being really tense because of how dangerous the cave itself is.
after an hour or so i was wondering if there actually were monsters or if i heard wrong, then when they did introduce the monsters they did it in such a way it's as much a shock for the viewer as for the girls in the movie.

I'm a bit confused from the comments. Is this a remake or an edited "amercian" version? anyhow, i loved dog soldiers and didn't know till this interveiw that it was by the same guy. I've been hearing and seeing blurbs, ads, recommends for the descent all over the place. The poster of the skull kinda a play on the old drawings/turn of the century photography piece. Now after reading this interview I really wanna see it. You gotta have a bit of depth and story so I really hope this is NOTa haute tension (which sucked!!!!!!). One of the only few fillms I've ever walked out on. Something tells me I won't walk out on the descent. Think I'll go see it with my female climber friends to see them freak.
This guy graduated from my course at Uni, he came back one day to do a talk but I was skiving in town
He's arguably our most famous graduate so far. He's the reason we got imposed on 5 minute limits for our final year films each, cos Niel and co booked out all the lights and equipment for ages to make a 40 minute werewolf movie for his final year!
Always nice to hear how he's doing since he made it big.
