Can we even imagine Weekend Update without Tina Fey? Well, come next season, we'll have to.

Fey, who started at SNL in 1997 and has acted as head writer and "Weekend Update" coanchor since 2000, will be leaving along with fellow Chicago comedy alum Rachel Dratch.

"I'm out of the fake news business now," Fey said at the Television Critics Association summer session Saturday. "I am going to focus just on the new show right now. I've been at Saturday Night Live for nine years total. I know I'll never ever not be there in some way. I'm never not going to call up with an opinion or show up on hiatus wanting to write a sketch. But I will not be in the cast next year. I won't be a paid employee of Saturday Night Live next year."

No, Fey will be far too busy writing, executive-producing and starring in 30 Rock, a half-hour comedy focusing on an SNL-type show...which happens to star Rachel Dratch.

But who will replace Dratch & Fey in the SNL cast? Who will host Weekend Update? Andy Samberg is no Chevy Chase - or even Jimmy Fallon - so we remain wary.

"We're going to do a bunch of tests, as we've done pretty much every time we've had to make a transition--different combinations and different people alone," SNL producer Lorne Michaels said. "We'll do that in September and decide then what we think the best approach is."

With foresight like that, we're sure Lorne will have no problem putting together yet another stellar season of, er, unforgettable material.

I hope Amy Poehler doesn't get bumped from WU over this, but from what Michaels said, it sounds like she just might.

Hopefully Tina's new show catches on... ...and is good. I'm sure what she's created is good, it's whether NBC's execs (and they're pretty much wholly removed from SNL, so that's really no indication) will let it draw air in the same form in which she created it.

Jimmy Fallon sucked.. He ruins sketches. The only person on SNL who was worse than Jimmy Fallon as far as acting goes was Horatio Sanz, but at least he was funny sometimes.

I'm kind of disappointed, SNL had the best cast for so long, then started making bad sketches, and then the great cast left.. and now that the cast is boring again, they're making good sketches again. I don't understand it.

I haven't watched a complete SNL show - let alone a complete season - in 6 years. It's as predictable as a Jay Leno monologue. and as tepid as tap water.

I think SNL is usually funny enough.

It's always been cool to say SNL sucks, but how many among you have laughed at Lazy Sunday?

The current SNL sucks. Because it actually does. Take it from someone who was around for Season 1, 2, 3....

Totally agree! I always thought he was great at it, but have been roundly mocked for my view. And yet, why hasn't he been able to make the leap into movies or decent TV? The man desperately needs a new agent.

I thought Dirty Work was very funny. I also enjoyed his short-lived show "Norm"...and almost pissed my pants when he played Death on Family Guy.

I think Norm is funny in the way that is hysterical to people who "get it" and completely baffling to those who don't.
