Dakota Fanning took on a new risque roll that required the twelve-year-old to participate in a graphic rape scene. Other scenes portray the child in only her panties. But don’t worry about Dakota—her mother claimed it’s ok because she might get an Oscar nomination for the performance.

Director Deborah Kampmeier began filming Hounddog in North Carolina. Kampmier also wrote the story as “a drama set in the American South, where a precocious, troubled girl (Fanning) finds a safe haven in the music and movement of Elvis Presley.” Producers stressed the rape scene was carefully choreographed.

The script requires the preteen actress to confront tougher challenges than Brooke Shields and Jodie Foster did when, at Fanning's age, they played child prostitutes.

"It's not just the rape scene - the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress," Fanning's longtime agent, Osbrink [said]. "And I've never been so proud of her in my life. I've seen the dailies, and in every scene she gets better and better."

Child molesters everywhere will be burning up their DVD players with the scenes of young Dakota’s smooth, pre-adolescent body brutalized by a violent offender, but I’m sure the director portrayed rape of a child in good taste.

Fanning and Tom Cruise doing...something.

I'd be really suprised if it's actually more challenging than Jodie Foster's or Brooke Shield's roles. Sounds a lot like promotions hype - at least i fucking hope so. I hope they're at least serious about making a good movie and not just being exploitive.

Once the movie is released, would having a clip of the rape scene on your hard drive constitute posession of child pornography?

I don't think it is the fact that they're showing a rape scene that is freaking people out, it's the fact that her mother seems to have the "parent vicariously living through their child" disease. It kind of disturbs me that she doesn't have a problem with her child's nudity because "she might win an oscar"... Plus the kid is friends with Tom Cruise, so there is a little guilt by association for me tongue

I wonder if they actually told Dakota what she was pretending to have happen to her or if they just said, "Freak out and cry and we'll give you an ice cream cone afterwards." I figure child actors in R-rated films only have a partial idea of what's going on and are handed abridged scripts.

I doubt it; I've read accounts of how child actors who start off so young and enjoy so much early success practically became little adults as opposed to kids.

Interestingly enough I was watching a special on child actors earlier today and they were talking about some young boy who had to cry for a scene and he couldn't. So the director took the kid's dog and had someone in the crew take it behind a curtain and fire a pistol with a blank thus making the child think his dog got shot. So yeah, the kid started crying for the scene but couldn't stop when it was over...fuuuuuuuuucked up!

Well we read about it in Lolita -- is there a difference with seeing it on screen?

I personally don't think I'd find such a film to my liking, let alone in good taste; but one does wonder.

Never the less, I think it's just decency and prudence. I don't think many people will find a nude rape scene with a 12 year old girl particularly tasteful. Then again, I don't know -- the world is proving itself to be rather depraved.

Yeah, but that happens to kids regardless of what roles they take. It has more to do with having so much money and being in the public light than what they actually pretend is happening to them when they work.

That thing about the dog is pretty messed up. I doubt it's the norm, though. I mean, most child actors have to be able to cry on queue. That's probably part of the audition.
