So I'm applying at American Apparel.

They ask for (but do not require) submitting a photo, which I find weird.

Are they good to work for?

What's the best company you've worked for?

I spent a few years at B.D.'s Mongolian Barbeque, and it was a pretty good place to work. My girlfriend's at Starbucks right now and isn't really down with their corporate culture. They're one of those places where you're expected to drink the Kool-Aid, if you get my drift.

you have to be somewhat attractive to work there. more places should do this. it would save a lot of time.

i was a manager at an la store for a while - they want to put a face to a name and also make sure that you fit the look of the company. its fashion. its like that.

also if you have a lot of visible tattoos and piercings they will still consider you for backstock.

you can ask me anything you want about the company i worked there for a really long time. my friend caroline is the hiring manager for your store smile

After you get hired, turn into a bloated hag and sue them after they fire you.

So, it the hiring person doesn't find "people of color" attractive it would make it ok not to hire "minorities"? Or if people in wheel-chairs aren't attractive, it would be o.k. to say no to them too?

im sure that if someone isnt going to get the job for whatever reason, they would rather not waste their time in a pointless interview.

Well, the employment of models, strippers, Hooters girls, and gyms can depend on someone's physical appearance...

Actually, a stripper can be as fat and ugly as she wants. Guess how much money she would make?

Those are federally protected minorities.

Let me know when "ugly" is a federally protected minority.

Dude there's a dude at one of the Chicago AAs who has visible tattoos like whoa, and he "works the reg" as the retail kids say.

Actually, I believe what they're doing is illegal. Appearance is not a BFOQ in retail. I'd be shocked if they weren't sued and soon.

To be more specific, I would expect that anyone who is part of a federally protected minority group was denied employment after submitting a photo with their application would have little trouble getting a case to court. Unless of course they go for the big cash settlement.

Were there an AA within a bazillion miles of my sleepy beach town, I'd go in and apply for a counter position, if for no other reason than to Photoshop up a picture of Dov Charney jacking off in front of a female journalist, and submit that with my application.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.

And I think its a lame "policy". How attractive you are does not dictate if you are a good or qualified potential or current employee.

But I shouldn't be surprised that this is their application process. They clearly don't really like "fat" people either, seeing as their clothes are made to fit Barbie dolls and smaller. whatever

I can see both sides of the argument. On the one hand, the government shouldn't be allowed to force a company like AA to hire some smelly, balding 800 lb. guy with a club foot and an eye patch for equality's sake, but even if it isn't officially on the books, AA absolutely does have a "pretty people only" approach to their hiring processes.

As an aside, I went into the SoHo AA earlier this year to exchange one pair of thigh highs that I had bought for my (then) girlfriend for another pair, and I'll tell you, I've never encountered such bitchy, unhelpful customer service in a clothing boutique before in my life. But God damn if they weren't the prettiest boys and girls I've ever seen, so, I guess it's ok. /sarcasm

Well, let's be specific. Does it dictate if you are a good or qualified potential or current employee at McDonald's? Not so much. At a place like American Apparel? Yeah, I think it matters. People (myself included) go into an AA and expect the staff to look like the models, which I think is fair (and fucking ridiculous).

And ugly chicks with small boobs could totally sell wings at Hooters, too.

In theory, though not in practice, I agree with your statement. You obviously don't eat at Hooters as often as I do (there's one in the strip mall across the street from the building where I work); if you did, you'd know that, like, 10% to 20% of Hooters girls could easily enroll in the IBTC.

Right, right. Okay, how about "ugly fat chicks could totally sell wings at Hooters, too"?

Or even "men could totally sell wings at Hooters, too"? The EEOC sued Hooters over discriminatory hiring practices in the 90s, and let the matter drop -- businesses are allowed to hire people that fit their stated image, as long as they aren't discriminating against federally protected minorities.
