Barry Yourgrau spoke with Steven Shainberg, director of "Secretary," the much-acclaimed movie fable about twisted (?) love and love's twists. It's Shainberg's second feature, his first being "Hit Me," from a script by Denis Johnson. This conversation took place at Bar 6 in downtown New York on January 20.

BLEAKNESS, SWEETIE

BARRY YOURGRAU: Mary Gaitskill's original story, "Secretary," seems to be very different than the movie.

STEVEN SHAINBERG: Yeah. Mary's story ends with the girl being...

I just found out that Maggie Gyllenhaal from Secretary is the sister of Jake Gyllenhaal from Donnie Darko. How cool. There's a picture of them together here

I loved reading this. I admire that Yourgrau didn't placate Shainberg when inquiring about the word "fuck" (even though I agree with Shainberg there). It's refreshing to find an interviewer who can be this honest and I'm really looking forward to Shainberg's future projects and watching him delvelop as a director.

I don't think i've said this enough, but James Spader fuckung rules. i can only ask for more "creepy weirdo" roles for him to play.

I loved Secretary. I love to see and hear about little crazy things that people do. I wounder what it would be like to send a worm to someone. I have always wanted to do wierd things like that but never had the nerve.

What Shainberg says about the tension in some of those scenes is so true...you're pretty scared, wondering what the hell's gonna happen next. Dramatic and sexual tension.
I hope the interview doesn't spoil things for the folks who haven't seen it. It's the kinda movie where it's best just to see it without knowing anything, with all the unpredicatble interplay between many characters, not just Gyllenhall and Spader.
...and Buffalo '66 is really good.

mmmm i love this film. i had no idea the script had a bad ending. I thought the part with the tree was a very touching ending for a jarring film.
