Sony, the company that brought you the rootkit "copy protection" that fucked up your computer, might be at it again. Some people have noticed a patent that Sony took out in 2000 that would "register" a disc with the console it is originally played on -- thus making it impossible to play used games.
Documents filed in April 2000 with the U.S. Patent Office describe a method of copy protection by which the game system would verify a disc as legitimate, register the disc to that particular game console, then wipe out verification data so the disc would be rendered unreadable in other PlayStations.
"Since only titles for which legitimate software has actually been purchased and which have been initially registered in the machine table can be used, resale (so-called used software purchase) after purchase by an end user becomes practically impossible," according to the patent documents.
Although Sony has been vague about its plans for the technology, "I actually think they're toying with this idea," said Michael Pachter, a game industry analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities.
Pachter said he thought Sony probably would not tighten the software locks on PlayStation 3 games but might employ bolstered copy protection on other forms of entertainment downloaded to the console over the Internet.
"Maybe they'll copy protect movies or music downloads," he said.
It's all part of a larger effort to gut the concept of "fair use." Sony has been very aggressive in asserting the position that if you buy some form of content, such as music, a movie, a game, or anything else, you aren't buying the content itself, just a license to use that content. Thus, they can deny you the right to copy it elsewhere, or, in this case, to sell it to someone else.
So let's see: it's already going to be a couple of hundred dollars, at least, more expensive than the other consoles, it might impose truly onerous copy protection from you, and it's coming from a company that seems to be working overtime to screw its customers. Still want that PS3?
honestly, if your going to pay that much for a machine that plays video games, why dont you just buy a computer? with sonys estimated price of 600 bucks, justifying it by saying its cheap if you think about the value of the blue ray player it is, thats great but i want to play games on a video game console, not watch movies(though its a plus). consoles are cool because they used to be alot less then going out and upgrading your computer every time a new game came out.. though im not sure about sony's success with all of this crap going on with the PS3.. i hear that theres going to be a blue ray sortage just in time for a shortage this holiday season... i think most people will just buy a Wii, or an xbox 360. i try out most of my games thru gamefly, and with that stupid software registering that would put an end to that.. i hate wasting 50 bucks on a POS game.. expecially if i couldnt trade it in and get at least a small fraction of my money back. so hell no, i dont want a ps3. ill stick with my PSP though if i see another unneccesary firmware update that serves no purpose but to just limit the capibilites of the machine im going to give up on sony all together and get a DS lite.
I sincerely doubt Sony would gut its own market by denying used game sales. It would be an incredibly silly thing to do with the PS2 currently being dominant, and thus the used game industry for PS2 also being dominant. The used game industry doesn't make Sony any money, but they should be happier to have it then not to, as it serves as free promo for their brand, generally on titles that are no longer in their sales charts anymore regardless.
Guess what, this technology has been around for 6 years, way before the playstation 3 even had a design. I read about it in detail in a popular science magazine, if you keep up on DRM technology you already know about it.
There is no evidence or inkling that Sony will or will not use this technology that they have had for 6 years and not used yet. And no hint at all connecting this technology to the PS3 so far.
Although Sony has been vague about its plans for the technology, "I actually think they're toying with this idea," said Michael Pachter, a game industry analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities.
I hate to be the guy who says "Is this news???", but there is nothing to this article but some random guy saying: "Hmm, I dunno they could do anything they want. *shruggles*"
Newsflash:
Rolls Royce may choose to power their next production automobile with a full scale Turbo-fan Jet engine. They have been sitting on a series patents for such a device for over 30 years, and currently have the facilities to mass produce such a powerplant!
by the time Metal Gear 4 and FF 13 (the two reasons I want one) come out..... we'll certainly know for sure about all this and then I'll decide... two great games vs. the inability to try out tons of possibly great games as well..... (via gamefly or Blockbuster).....dilemma dilemma
Blu-Ray is the reason the PS3 is gonna be a bargain at 600 bucks. But if the games are to be $70 or more (as has been rumored) then all that goes out the window. I plan on getting one when it releases and it'll sit very nicely by my XBox360 and Nintendo Wii. The games for it will be amazing and movie capability is phenominal.

And you know this because you have a personal time machine and travelled into the future?
C'mon. We have previews. Previews are ALWAYS glowing to the point of radioactivity. Until the thing actually comes out and we have actual experiences with it and the finished games for it, there's no telling. My personal bet is that the launch games will span "sucktastic" to "forgettably mediocre" because that is launch game territory for most consoles. (Halo was an exception, but one that imho did not reach its full potential until it hit PC. Obviously many people disagree with me.) But I could be wrong. I'm certainly not stating anything definitive.
On other notes (not related to Jonnieboy's post): this whole "no used games" rumor has already hit SG repeatedly and it's just as much a random unconfirmed rumor now as it was then. It would be astonishingly stupid. It would kill PS3 sales and places like Gamestop would quite possibly stop carrying PS3 games because they make their profits on the used market. I mean, okay, so it's Sony. It's vaguely conceivable they'd be that stupid. But I'm sure not making any decisions based on "vaguely conceivable".
And you would buy a PS3 instead of a PC because there will be games for PS3 that will not come to PC. I guarantee it. Of course, what I would do is get a PC, Revolution, Xbox 360, and then maybe a PS3, in that order. But I am crazy and spend far too much money on gaming.

But Blu-Ray really sucks! Yeah, it's super-sharp video, but have you looked into the DRM side of it? You can only copy it a limited number of times, and each time you copy it you have to get a special code or something from the publisher! Can you say "enormous fucking hassle?"
Also, if you try to play a Blu-Ray disc that your player deems to be "non-authentic," it disables your player. This activates a voice chip inside that repeats the words, "HA HA, FUCK YOU."

It's well known that the first round of screenshots for any new game or system are almost totally bullshit. That's just how it goes.

if the blu-ray playback is decent (i'm skeptical, based on how shitty DVD quality has been on other consoles), and you're an A/V enthusiast, then sure, it's a bargain. but to the vast majority of consumers, who don't even know what blu-ray is yet, the extra cost just isn't worth it.
DVD playback was somewhat of a selling point for the PS2, as the medium was still fairly new and a lot of people didn't own a standalone player. it's different with the PS3, as blu-ray is more of an upgrade rather than a new standard; plus, less than 20% of americans even own an HDTV (don't know that statistics for elsewhere) to best take advantage of it.
personally, i own an HDTV, and i'm interested in the new DVD formats, but it's painfully obvious that most people couldn't care less. i'm not sure that blu-ray playback built into the PS3 is going to catch the attention of many people, at least not at first. it's incredibly wonky, but the X360 HD-DVD add-on is looking sort of sensible in comparison, at this point.

meh, when I stand in line for ten hours to get one the first day I'll still be able to resell that day for a +$300 profit.
probably even more than that. it's looking likely that there'll be less to go around than there were 360s last year. the price doesn't even matter; holidays + early adopters = demand, always.
fuck ps3 - i never wanted a ps2 - never EVER will want a 3
i bought spent $600 - bought 4 games, a second control and the FULL system with 360.
we have the already mentioned Halo 3 - which will already blow any final fantasy away
and then there's Gears of War
possibly the sleekest coolest game you will ever blow shit up in
and - 360 is already out
Well, sure, Halo 3 will blow any Final Fantasy away...if you don't like RPGs...
I wasn't blown away by the first Halo (I liked it, but blown away? Nah.). I have no idea why 3 would be any different. Especially on a console, which is exactly the wrong place for FPSes, and the Halo franchise in particular. (Started out as a PC/Mac game. No, I'm not bitter, why do you ask?)
