that's los angeles, not louisiana. smile

here's the deal - one of my best friends in the whole world from when i was but a little boy is moving to LA. he's been driving from north carolina since early this week with his girlfriend in search of fame and fortune. i think he wants to be some manner of movie star but i can't say for sure. chase your dreams, i say!

thing is -- he's only been there once, isn't real familiar with the area and has no idea where to look for a reasonably priced 1 bedroom apartment to rent. this is where i'm seeking the help of you beautiful people as a favor to my friend.

whereabouts do YOU live? how's the rent? how's the area? can you reccomend some places? an idea of what he'd be paying?

any and all help will be greatly appreciated by both him and me -- cuz then it gives me a place to stay in LA after a 4 hour burn down 15 through the desert. smile

LA is a tough town. There's so much competition. If they want to do the acting thing well they can try. Better network quick, which I'm sure that will happen since a lot of out of towners tend to stick together.

Ever watch Mulholland Drive? what a good David Lynch message.

Like the Doc said.

Unfortunately, if you want to live somewhere cool, you're gonna have to pay.
But, I know plenty of people who live in Hollywood and pay a somewhat reasonable rent. Almost everyone I know there has 1-3 roommates. I'm guessing 1BRs go for around $800-900.

Probably the last remaining affordable place IN the city proper right now is Mid-Wilshire/KoreaTown. Parts of it might look a little sketchy to you, and can be a little loud at times, but is cheap. You can probably find a 1BR for $500 in a big 1920/30s bldg. But don't expect it to be swank. Depending on where you are, the neighborhood is mostly black, latino or korean - not many whites, but there are some. Parking can be difficult.

You can also find kinda-reasonable places in Mar Vista, Palms & maybe still Culver City. These are all westside and according to Dr_H is for snooty hippies. That's not true. It's just not cool in some people's eyes. There are still a lot of normal mid and low-income families who live thereas opposed to many single young people. Also on the West side, if you are lucky, you can find affordable places in Venice, near the beach. It is a very particular culture consisting of hippies, new-agers, artists left over from the 60s and 70s, beach people and body-builders. Some elements are nice, but depending on your temperament, Venice an get annoying. But if you like being close to the ocean, you will like it. You can find cheap places there, but they will probably be very small.

I live in Santa Monica only because I have rent control. Howeverf you cannot move here now and enjoy that feature as the city abolished it. I would move if I could, but I have sucha good deal. It has become too gentrified here.

If you go a little farther outside of the city, you can find places in Mt. Washington, Highland Park, and places in the Valley. Some of these places can mean long drive times.

Check www.recycler.com

It is also worth the $40 (or whatever they charge now) to join an apt hunting service. There are quite a few. I'm sure you can find them n the phone book.

Good luck
