So I'm gonna be in Portland from the 25th of this month until July 1. I'd love recommendations for:
1. Good places to get food.
2. Good places to get coffee.
3. Good places to hang out. (Dante's is already on my list...)
4. Events or shows to check out.
The San Francisco SG hookup was a hoot and it would be awesome if something similar is happening in Portland. If we can get something set up I'll be sure to bring extra wine...
Try Beatersville in N portland for breakfast they are so damn cute and yummy and cheap too!
Dantes especially on sundays
India Oven if you like Indian food
Matador, tiger bar, crystal ballroom tonight for foxy boxing!
check barfly maga(zine) for good bars. esp. matador, commodore (stiffest drinks in town), holmans, dantes.
food: la bonita on NE alberta and 29th, nicolas's on grand and oak i think (meditteranean food), cafe lena i hear is good, chez what (NE alberta and 22nd), saigon kitchen. foxy boxing tonight. i'll be there. shops: reading frenzy, counter media, hawthorne blvd, 2nd ave records, discourage records, jackpot records. hangouts: red and black (collectively run) cafe, the fresh pot (hawthorne), addis cafe on NE mlk and russell, star e rose cafe on NE alberta and 24th, my house....
there you go, should get you going
I agree about Nicolas' on Grand. I'd never tried lebanese food until I ate there a few months ago. It's some righteous grub. I also recommend Swaggat's Indian on NW 21st and Lovejoy, Pancake House on SE Powell near Milwaukie for late night food to soak up the booze, and a breakfast place that I forgot the name of that's on SE 12th near the Snake and Weasel. A bar that I like, but their food is sometimes good, sometimes bad, is Tennessee Red's on SE 11th. The jukebox is great and it's pretty low key so you don't have to talk over anything.
No one mentioned Powells?!

Thanks to all for the suggestions! Unfortunately, I'm just now reading them, now that I'm back home! I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to get in touch with you guys, but Portland was great. Oh, the stories I have...
I did make it to the Crystal Ballroom for foxy boxing. Some guy bought me a beer because he felt bad for wrongly accusing me of calling him "fatty." The boxing was a hoot to watch and that little girl guitarist from Hell's Belles was amazing! I also went to Dante's on Sunday. That was an experience, to say the least! I saw Veronica there and although I didn't get much of a chance to chat with her, I was able to at least introduce myself.
Powells was incredible. I'm still amazed that I walked out of there with only one book: a history of Freemasonry. The Portland City Grill had some cute waitresses, but the ambiance at Berboti (sp?) was more to my liking. Now I want to move to Portland. There are sooo many pretty girls there! And I wish we had something like the TriMet here in California.
I'm going to have to round up some of the Bay Area SG contingent and try to find an excuse to head back up there...
i am glad that you made it to powell's it really is one of the most amazing places in the country. and thank you for coming out to support the SG's. we should work for the portland travel commision. converting californians to portland one at a time.
Yes, Tri-met is groovy. Nice that it's free downtown. Just make sure that you don't fall to sleep on it or you may end up in Hillsburrito or Gresham! Also, Powells can be dangerous-you may find yourself lost in there and finally find your way out after days of book shopping!
