Okay, so here I am slaving away at this friggin awful cold marine corps base, just biding my time for a couple weeks until be sent into the desert in oh so lovely Iraq. Anyway, a guy from Texas was assigned to us just a coupe weeks ago. He comes from Austin, he says it's everything I'm looking for. Biking, music, ecclectic artsy people, and the most important, no real cold weather to speak of. My question is, what's a guy to do? Which city in Texas has the most going for it in terms of relocation, I put it to you SG members!

Austin is the only place in Texas I even remotely liked when I toured through.

Austin is freaking awesome. With one caveat: It's surrounded by Texas.

Okay, so far overwhelmingly Austin. It has Lance, so theres another plus. Any water there, I need a body of water or I'll go absolutely insane.

I agree...
I've only toured and not really lived there tho.
One of my sweet ex-girlfriend earned a much desired gig as a co-curator at Houston Moma, she loves Austin so much she, commutes!

Oh and there is one MAJOR reason I'd move to Austin myself:

Austin IS the answer. I live in Dallas and went to school in Austin. If they had a job for me there I would go in a minute. Everyone is so much more laid back than in Dallas! So go there, I doubt you will regret it.

See, Austin is still IN TEXAS. Why wouldn't you move somewhere cool, that also happens to be surrounded by somewhere cool? Moving to Austin strikes me as similar to moving to an awesome little island in a sea of flaming shit.

I just left Austin after a year and a half - and that is so true. Have a 3 day weekend and want to go somewhere? Your are SOL, corporal.

Got nothing bad to say about Austin other than that. Iraq will have you acclimated to the summer too!

I've lived in Austin my whole life. I agree it is an island within a sea of shit, but it's well worth it. If you are looking for a body of water, there is Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan. There are plenty of beautiful natural springs and such nearby also. Just one bad thing is the humidity. When it's 100 degrees outside, it feels like 120 from the humidity. But I wouldn't trade this town for anything.

Most people from Texas think that Texas is the greatest thing in the world. I don't have experience to say whether they're telling the truth or not, but it's kind of annoying.

Just left Houston not too long ago.
You need a body of water? In Texas? It does rain quite a bit in Houston, and sometimes floods, thereby making bodies of water, but it smells fucking awful.

Uh, you mean kind of like NYC surrounded by North NJ, Long Island, and Conn.??? Talk about flaming shit...

Austin is quite cool. You will not go wrong with it. Dallas is also cool.

Ever been to Jersey? If you've made it away from Newark, and off the Turnpike, it's actually pretty nice. And the shore and Atlantic City are also worthwhile. Then there's upstate NY, also nice. Philly is an easy drive, as is DC. Boston as well.

The closest decent thing to Austin is, well, Mexico. Then maybe New Orleans. Other than that, you've got vast expanses of Texas, followed by Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, etc.

So, basically, you're wrong.

Austin sucks. I hate that place with passion. I grew up in Fort Worth, and the handful of times I ventured to Austin I had a horrible time and/or almost got killed. It's a shitty little town where everyone has an attitude about their shitty little town. There's a reason I moved away from Texas, mostly weather related. For jobs and people, Texas is not a bad place to be. It's just the summers.

Stay away from Houston. That city is like the screeching nexus of the universe. My friends and I barely escaped its gravity alive.

I'll throw in another vote for Austin.

It's alright if they're frozen, yeah?

Austin is an island of blue in a sea of red.

Parts of Houston rock (Montrose, Heights, lower Westheimer...)

I think Deep Ellum is probably the only cool part of Dallas.

And San Antonio has it's secrets...Southtown is starting to take off...there's always been a music scene there that doesn't get the attention Austin's does, but how can you ignore the home of the Fearless Iranians from Hell?
