I am attempting a trek across the country starting...tomorrow! In my car, though, not on foot. See, I was just separated from the Navy and I handed in my apartment keys not even a week ago. I'd stick around here (I mean, how bad is it being homeless, really?), but I'm trying to make it back to San Francisco for prom. Until then, I only have a couple of definitive places to visit since plans fell through. I'll be in DC for the 15th, Philly from the 22nd to the 25th, New York from the 25th to the first of May, and then Minnesota for a week.
I would love some suggestions on how to fill in those gaps, places to go and things to see.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is pretty great - they have wild horses and a bison herd. And the Badlands National Park + those big guys heads isn't bad either. They make interesting stopping points after a long drive across the prairie.
Wall Drug is highly overrated. But they do have free water.
Also: porn-related advice - GRAND TETON NP. Also gorgeous.
NYC has a fuck ton of museums. Tim Burton has an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art until 4/26. http://moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/313
Theater Development Fund/TKTS has great day of show ticket discounts for Broadway Shows: http://www.tdf.org/TDF_HomePage.aspx
Availability varies from day to day, and lines are often long later in the week/weekends.
Times Square blows mules if you're not looking to be a true tourist. Central Park is good for people watching. Well, most of NYC is good for people watching.
I'm just glad you played the video, because that's what I thought of when I saw this thread. Also, it should you be going through your head for your entire trip.
planning is for squares.
just get in the car and go west, young man!
i recommend giving yourself lots of time in new mexico. white sands, the jemez, truth or consequences, the off-the-grid community outside of taos.
hit me up if you come to albuquerque.
i've got a hobo-crash-pad in the loft of my place: the kosmos
Route 70 through Colorado and Utah is a must! I used to take it whist heading from Chicago to LA.. So damn beautiful all the way to the 15 down into Vegas.. the tiny part of the 15 that passes through the northwestern corner of Arizona is full of wow as well..
I'll show you around philly.
we have the oldest penitentiary in the country, and a super creepy museum of medical oddities.
some really good pizza, and a really big woodsy park, for a city.
usually there is some music.
